Tips for Keeping Ants Away this Spring

As we get further into the spring season, we're seeing more and more pests make their way indoors. However, recently, we've seen a lot of rain in this region, making one certain pest particularly noticeable this time of year: Ants. Ants will typically come into houses to escape the extensive moisture in the ground until it dries out. While ants are not always dangerous, they can be a nuisance and they can also contaminate food. Your Lake of the Ozarks pest control company has a few tips to help you keep ants away this spring.

Eliminate Points of Entrance
Take the time to inspect your home to look for easy access points. Ants can gain entrance to your home through cracks and crevices around entry points such as the window sills, door frames, laundry vents, gaps around water pipes, A/C vents, tree branches and utility lines touching the house, and through the chimney. Trees and bushes should be trimmed away from the home, as they can provide a roadway to your home. Seal any cracks and crevices on the outside of the home with silicon caulk.

Remove Attractants
Keep the kitchen counters clean, as well as the counter tops in the bathrooms. Store food in airtight containers or in the refrigerator. Additionally, make sure the lids are tight on all your trash cans, both inside and outside. Don’t leave anything to chance. Hose down the area around the trash cans at least once a week to wash away the pheromones ants leave behind.

Get Rid of Moisture
The reason you find ants in the bathroom is that they are always on the lookout for water. Once they find a good source of it, they will return and stay nearby.  Don’t let moisture sit on counters and other sources. Repair leaky pipes and routinely check under sinks for areas of moisture. If your home has a lot of moisture naturally, it may be wise to use a de-humidifier to help control the excess moisture. Take a look around the outside of your home and check that the downspouts and gutters are functioning properly so that the water flows away from your house.

Keep Pets Clean
Pets can unintentionally invite ants into our homes. Their food and water bowls are an attractant for pests, so be sure to keep pet bowls clean and clean up any spilled food or water promptly. It's a good idea to store dry pet food in a sealed container rather than the paper bag they often come in. If the food is left in the paper bag, it could be an easy access for ants and other pests getting into it. In addition, inspect dog/cat doors to ensure pests cannot get through. Ants can fit through even the tiniest of openings.

Essential oils can help get rid of these unwanted house guests while providing an environmentally friendly pest control option for homes throughout the Lake of the Ozarks. Essential oils are great for repelling pests. Check out the essential oils pest control options we have available and the benefits of using environmentally friendly essential oils for your pest control needs.

Essential Oils provide a natural alternative to chemical pest control methods. By using all-natural essential oils, you can eliminate both your pest problems and your chemical concerns.

Benefits of Essential Oils for Pest Control
Essential oils are a natural way to rid your home of pests that are a great alternative to pesticides. Essential oils can be a cost-effective way to take on the pest problems in your home. These scents not only keep the bugs away, but they can also be the key to fixing many pest-related health issues. Using the right essential oils can help prevent skin and respiratory irritation.

Here are some commonly used essential oils and how they can be used for pest prevention:

Geranium:  Rose geranium is a successful repellent for ticks.

Cedarwood:  Cedarwood is toxic to ticks.

Peppermint:  Mint essential oils, including spearmint, is a strong repellant to big and small pests.  Mice, spiders, ants, fleas, and more all hate the mint smells.

Citronella: The most famous essential oil for insect repellants. It has been registered as an official repellent AND a non-toxic biopesticide since after World War 2.

Eucalyptus:  Eucalyptus is a common flea, tick, and mosquito repellant. Use a diluted concentration sparingly, as Eucalyptus can be toxic if ingested. Some people will use diluted eucalyptus sprays around the house or around pet areas to help deter fleas.

Lavender:  Not only does it have a soothing, almost calming effect on us, it is also a potent insect and pest repellent.  There is some sparse data that has shown lavender oil can prevent tick eggs from hatching.

Call A B Pest Control & Insulation!
Essential oils are great to use around the home for taking care of small pest problems on your own. However, sometimes if your problem is bigger than you can handle on your own, you may need commercial strength essential oils. If you're in need of something more than your typical daily dose of essential oils to take care of your pest problem, give A B Pest Control & Insulation a call. We'll be happy to come out and see what needs to be done to get rid of your pest problem as quickly and effectively as possible.

Remember, the best way to keep pests away is preventive treatments. We can get you on the schedule for routine pest control treatments so you don't have to worry about pests taking over your home in the future. Want to learn more about routine pest control? Give us a call today!

Health Benefits of Dandelions

Springtime is here, which means we're spending more time outdoors and in our yards. The last thing we want to deal with is weeds taking over. In order to achieve and maintain a beautiful lawn, A B Pest Control and Insulation truly believes that you should implement basic lawn care practices. On top of that, it takes time and work to ensure your lawn isn't overtaken by weeds. And we can help you keep those weeds under control.

One of the most common weeds we often see in lawns are dandelions. Yes, they can be a frustration when trying to keep your lawn looking great... but did you know there are actually many potential health benefits to dandelions? We thought it'd be fun to share some of that information with you!

Health Benefits of Dandelions

Highly nutritious
From root to flower, dandelions are highly nutritious plants loaded with vitamins, minerals, and fiber. Dandelion greens can be eaten cooked or raw and are an excellent source of vitamins A, C, and K. They also contain vitamin E, folate, and small amounts of other B vitamins. What’s more, dandelion greens provide a substantial amount of several minerals, including iron, calcium, magnesium, and potassium.

Contains potent antioxidants
Dandelion is full of potent antioxidants, which may explain many of its medicinal properties. Dandelions contain high levels of the antioxidant beta carotene, which may protect against cell damage and oxidative stress. They’re also rich in another type of antioxidants called polyphenols, which are found mostly in the flower but occur in the roots, leaves, and stems as well.

May help fight inflammation
Dandelion may reduce inflammation, thanks to certain compounds such as polyphenols. Inflammation is a normal immune system response to injury or infection. However, long-term inflammation may lead to permanent damage to your body’s tissues and DNA.

May aid in blood sugar management
Chicoric and chlorogenic acid are two bioactive compounds in dandelion that may help decrease blood sugar levels. Studies have shown that these compounds may improve the secretion of insulin, as well as the absorption of glucose in your muscles. This process leads to improved insulin sensitivity and reduced blood sugar levels.

May reduce cholesterol and triglyceride levels
Some compounds in dandelion may decrease triglyceride and cholesterol levels, both of which are key risk factors for heart disease. Studies have shown that dandelion leaf and root extract can decrease triglyceride accumulation in fat cells. Similarly, dandelion leaf extract can significantly reduce levels of total cholesterol and triglycerides.

May have anticancer effects
Perhaps one of the most intriguing health claims about dandelion extract is its potential to prevent the growth of cancerous cells in various organ systems. A 4-week study in rats showed that administering dandelion root extract modified specific pathways involved in suppressing the growth and spread of breast cancer cells. Other test-tube studies have found that dandelion root extract may slow the growth of cancer cells in liver, colon, and stomach tissue.

Hire the Professionals!
As you can see, there are many potential health benefits to dandelions. But when it comes to keep your lawn looking great, dandelions may not be something you find attractive. If you're looking for some help on keeping your lawn weed free, A B Pest Control and Insulation has a formula for success for your lawn. The best lawn service company at the Lake of the Ozarks can evaluate your lawn’s needs and put it on a regular maintenance schedule so that it stays healthy and weed-free throughout the year.
