It's World Bee Day! How Much Do YOU Know About Bees?

With spring here and summer soon to come, we're seeing more critters, bugs and insects making their debut as they migrate back or come out of hibernation for the spring and summer seasons. One particularly important insect that we'll be encountering are bees! While some folks may perceive them as a nuisance, these tiny fliers offer several benefits to the environment that we shouldn't forget about! And since today is World Bee Day, we thought it'd be fun to dive in and pollinate some good information about these helpful little critters!

The Process of Pollination
As many may already know, the first and most important benefit of bees is that they are master pollinators! Bees carry pollen from plant to plant and flower to flower, which essentially assists in the reproduction of plant life. In fact, bees are responsible for pollinating nearly 85% of all food crops for humans, as well as a number of crops that are used to feed our livestock. Bees are such an essential part of pollination for food source, that research has shown that the nonexistence of bees could cause an environmental collapse!

Offering More than a Food Source
Both plants and animals alike owe many thanks to the bees of the world, but perhaps humans owe them the most appreciation. Our relationship with them began as early as the year 6000 BC in Spain when humans began utilizing their honey as a food source, medicine and form of currency, wax as a sealant and for candle-making, and of course, a bounty of actual fruits, vegetables and nuts.

The mysterious decline in bee populations worldwide is a clear sign of something going awry in the environment. 34th Annual Lake of the Ozarks Magic Dragon Street Meet Nationals Car Show - a Lake Area Chamber event.

The Magic Dragon Street Meet Nationals is a unique show for all makes, models, and years of cars, trucks and motorcycles. The show in its 34th year can have upwards of 1,000 participants and close to 10,000 spectators. Located in Central Missouri, we bring 30 years of show experience to the historic Bagnell Dam Strip at the Lake of the Ozarks. The strip is closed to normal traffic during show hours, so we only have show vehicles within the boundaries. This creates and absolutely electric atmosphere! Some say it's like being on the set of "American Graffiti".

Kick off the 2022 boating season by participating in the 25th Annual Spring Harbor Hop, The Lake's largest Poker Hop on the water!

Visit over 40 of our participating locations on the water to collect your poker hand. Enter the Harbor hop by stopping at any of the check points. To obtain a hand, sign up and pay an optional $20 donation. Any player can enter more than once. The 1st card is drawn at the checkpoint where the hand is purchased; 6 additional cards are obtained by hopping to six more checkpoints drawing one card, per hand, at each location. The hand is complete when the 7th card is drawn. To qualify the hand must be turned in by 7pm at your last checkpoint. Prizes are awarded to winners, and anyone can play! Winners will be notified by certified mail.

A few Harbor Hop checkpoints open as early as 9:00 am, but most open at 11:00 am. Check the website listed above for a complete list of participating locations and scheduled times.

The HK’s golf tournament benefitting Lake Regional Health System is one of the lake’s favorite traditions, and this year brings new excitement to the event. To start, the event has a new name, HK’s Lake of the Ozarks Open, and play stretches across two days — Thursday, May 19, and Friday, May 20 — and two Lake of the Ozarks premier golf courses — The Cove and Porto Cima. HK’s will continue its affiliation with the Kansas City Chiefs. Dante Hall, a Chiefs wide receiver and special teams player, will serve as the event’s honorary chair. Hall, a two-time NFL Pro Bowler, played for the Chiefs from 2000 to 2007. He will be joined by Kansas City Chiefs Ambassadors Keith Cash, Deron Cherry, Dustin Colquitt and Danan Hughes.

In addition to golf, the schedule of events includes a Rooftop Party at 6 p.m. Thursday, May 19, at The Lodge of Four Seasons Rooftop Bar for all players and select sponsors. Sax on the Beach will provide entertainment, and guests will enjoy signature chef food stations, as well as live and silent auctions. There also will be a virtual auction for the public at HKsGolf.com.
