5 Pest Prevention Tips to Keep Your Home Pest Free Through the Summer

It's that time of year when bugs, rodents, reptiles and other pests have made their way back into our lives and are enjoying the benefits of summer in our homes. Don't let those pesky bugs and rodents ruin your summer. By following some very simple pest prevention tips, you can keep these unwanted pests from taking over your home and lawn. Here are 5 pest prevention tips to keep your home pest free through the summer.

1. Eliminate Entry Points
What should be your first step in pest control and prevention? Find and eliminate any entry points they may be sneaking in through. If you don't take care of the entry points that pests are entering your home from, your attempts at pest prevention may be a wasted effort. We always recommend you find where they're coming in at, secure any possible entry points, then give us a call to handle the rest! If you need a recommendation for repairing structures or entry points, you're welcome to call us and we'll be happy to provide a recommendation for a specialist who can help.

2. Be Proactive about Flea and Tick Prevention and Treatment
During the spring and summer months, it's important to be proactive about flea and tick prevention. Ticks are capable of causing many diseases in your pet including Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain spotted fever. Make sure your dogs and cats are protected by regularly administering flea and tick oral or topical medications. Your veterinarian can advise you about the best product for your animals. To further prevent flea and tick infestations, be sure to get your lawn and home treated regularly by a professional pest control company.

3. Eliminate Food Sources
Keeping your home clean and tidy can help discourage cockroaches, ants and other food-loving pests. Wipe down counters and sweep the floors regularly to eliminate any crumbs or anything left behind from spills. Make sure to store leftover food in a tightly sealed container. In addition, if food is left out, it's a good idea to put it away or make sure it's covered to avoid a feast for pests. Finally, use a tightly sealing lid on trash cans and dispose of garbage regularly. Be sure your outside garbage can is pest-proof and won't easily be broken into by raccoons and other opportunistic wildlife.

4. Err on the Side of Caution and Call the Pros
With the warmer weather, we'll be seeing more and more bees and wasps flitting around and probably building nests near our homes. While not all wasps cause danger to humans, it's important to err on the side of caution, as any wasp will become territorial when they feel threatened. While some of them are scary to run into, others can be beneficial and keep other more frightening pests away. However, if you feel that pest removal and control is necessary to ensure the safety of you and your family, we highly recommend contacting a professional pest control company at the Lake of the Ozarks to handle your wasp infestation.

5. Evaluate Your Home's Insulation
Did you know that in addition to pest control, we're also a full-service insulation company at the Lake of the Ozarks? Proper insulation in your home ensures that your home stays nice and cool when it's hot outside and nice and toasty warm when it's cold outside. Plus, we can install pesticide infused insulation throughout your home to act as an additional barrier against unwanted pests. A B Pest Control & Insulation can evaluate your home or business and make the proper recommendations for the best insulation to meet your needs.

Get Your Ant Problem Under Control

Spring time in the Midwest is known for pop up storms and flooding. Recently, the Lake of the Ozarks has been experiencing a lot of storms. Ants will typically come into houses to escape the extensive moisture in the ground until it dries out. While ants are not always dangerous, they can be a nuisance and they can also contaminate food. Your Lake of the Ozarks pest control company has a few tips to help you control the ants coming into your home this spring.

Eliminate The Food Sources
Keeping your kitchen clean and tidy can help discourage ants and other food-loving pests. Wipe down counters and sweep the floors regularly to eliminate any crumbs or anything left behind from spills. Make sure to store leftover food in a tightly sealed container. In addition, if food is left out, it's a good idea to put it away or make sure it's covered to avoid a feast for ants. Finally, use a tightly sealing lid on trash cans and dispose of garbage regularly.

Eliminate The Water Sources
Reducing moisture and standing water around your home can go a long way not only in helping to prevent ants but also other pests as well. Repair leaky pipes and routinely check under sinks for areas of moisture. If your home has a lot of moisture naturally, it may be wise to use a de-humidifier to help control the excess moisture. Take a look around the outside of your home and check that the downspouts and gutters are functioning properly so that the water flows away from your house.

Keep Pets Clean
Pets can unintentionally invite ants into our homes. Their food and water bowls are an attractant for pests, so be sure to keep pet bowls clean and clean up any spilled food or water promptly. It's a good idea to store dry pet food in a sealed container rather than the paper bag they often come in. If the food is left in the paper bag, it could be an easy access for ants and other pests getting into it. In addition, inspect dog/cat doors to ensure pests cannot get through. Ants can fit through even the tiniest of openings.

Know The Spots
Most ants are found in the kitchen, as they contain both things that they need to survive, which are food and water. However, bathrooms, bedrooms, living rooms, basements, inside walls and HVAC systems are also known to attract ants. Ants typically come inside to search for food, so essentially no space is off-limits to them.

Cover Points of Entrance
Take the time to inspect your home to look for easy access points. Trees and bushes should be trimmed away from the home, as they can provide a roadway to your home. Seal any cracks and crevices on the outside of the home with silicone caulk.

Call a Pest Control Professional
Battling ants can be an uphill battle. The best way to win is by using a professional pest control company at the Lake of the Ozarks. If ants are not properly treated, they could continue to grow. Some ants, such as carpenter ants, can cause serious property damage. Make sure ants don't come into your home and call a professional.

A B Pest Control & Insulation can help you protect your home from all pests that affect Central Missouri from ants and spiders to termites and wasps and everything in between. Make sure pests don't ruin your summer fun and contact a professional Lake of the Ozarks pest control company today. 5 Essential Oils to Keep Pests Away

When it comes to your home and lawn, you want to use the utmost care and consideration when handling your pest control needs. If you've got pets or small children, the need for super safe, yet effective treatment options is top priority. Essential oils can help get rid of these unwanted house guests while providing a safe pest control option for homes with children and pets. This week, we're sharing with you 5 essential oils that are great for repelling those pests, as well as the creatures they're most effective at battling.

1. Lemongrass
Insects can’t stand the smell of lemongrass, which means that it’s especially good for keeping them out of your home. It’s especially good for repelling fleas, ticks, ants, gnats, flies, and mosquitoes. Citronella, which is the oil produced by lemongrass plants, is used in many natural pest solutions, and is a fantastic repellent that doesn't leave an awful odor.

2. Peppermint
The minty clean aroma of peppermint is so much better than that icky chemical smell, and it also serves as a natural insecticide that kills and repels mosquitoes, ants, fleas, beetles, spiders, flies and even mice. Peppermint oil is toxic-free, so it's safe to use in homes with children and pets. Plus, many people enjoy the smell of peppermint!

3. Eucalyptus
Research has shown that eucalyptus essential oil can be more effective against sand flies than all other natural products. Eucalyptus is effective against scale insects like mites, aphids, earwigs and whiteflies, which are killed on contact with eucalyptus oil. Due to the distinctly earthy aroma of eucalyptus oil, it's often used as a repellent for mosquitoes and other blood-sucking pests. In fact, The US Centers for Disease Control recommends oil of lemon eucalyptus as one of the solutions for long-lasting protection against mosquitoes and the diseases they spread.

4. Tea Tree Oil
Tea tree oil is its use as a combination insect repellent and natural insecticide against numerous pests, including mosquitoes, ants, and other biting or stinging insects. It has also been used to effectively kill lice and other parasites. The solvent properties of tea tree oil soaks into an insect’s exoskeleton upon contact and suffocates them. For this reason, tea tree oil is a great natural pest control remedy against bug infestations, in the home and even in protecting gardens.

5. Lavender Oil
Lavender essential oil has been used as a bug repellent for centuries, often utilized to protect clothes and linens from the infestation of moths and other insects. It helps to control an infestation of black beetles, flies, fleas and can even help one from being bitten by mosquitoes and other biting insects. The scent of lavender will not only repel unwanted insects from your home, but it will leave you feeling relaxed and at peace!

Call A B Pest Control & Insulation!
These 5 essential oils are great to use around the home for taking care of small pest problems on your own. However, sometimes if your problem is bigger than you can handle on your own, you may need commercial strength essential oils. If you're in need of something more than your typical daily dose of essential oils to take care of your pest problem, give A B Pest Control & Insulation a call. We'll be happy to come out and see what needs to be done to get rid of your pest problem as quickly and effectively as possible. Remember, the best way to keep pests away is preventive treatments. We can get you on the schedule for routine pest control treatments so you don't have to worry about pests taking over your home in the future. Want to learn more about routine pest control?
