Ways to Protect Your Lawn and Shrubs from Pests this Winter

When it comes to a manicured lawn, wintertime maintenance is left on the back burner. Before winter sets in, it’s best to start preparing your lawn right now for the cold, snow, and pests by calling your local pest control company near mid-Missouri for an inspection. That way you can anticipate any pests from invading in or around your home.

During the fall months, nearing winter, most pests seek out warm shelter as temperatures drop. The easiest accessibility for these pests? Your home, your lawn, your shrubs, etc. If pests can find shelter somewhere in your lawn, they’re sure to either destroy it or head for your home. A B Pest Control has come up ways to best prevent this from occurring.

Water Your Lawn

Although it might seem like snow would keep your lawn hydrated, it has the opposite effect. Snow suffocates your lawn and shrubs from getting hydration. Watering and maintaining your lawn’s hydration before it snows will help with moisture throughout the rest of winter. This will also help combat any damage that pests might do to dry out your lawn.

Get Rid of Debris

Clearing your lawn free of not only trash, but also dead leaves is so helpful for pest control. Pests tend to find temporary homes until piles of leaves or branches, which also can kill your lawn from depriving it of water, sun, and air.

Cover Up Your Shrubs

This might sound counterproductive when earlier it was noted that snow dehydrates plants. However, covering up shrubs and plants can protect them from the cold temperatures. It’s best to use covers or plastic specifically made for plants because this will be the most effective. Additionally, it’s important to secure the plants completely by securing the cover to the ground. This will help not only keep the cold out, but also, the pests, too. Plant and shrub covers are a double whammy.

While nothing is completely fool proof, these are awesome precautions to take to minimize damage to your lawn especially from pests. If you still find issues with pests invading your space, reach out to A B Pest Control for consultation. We wish you a wonderful fall and hopes that no one “bugs” you too much!

5 Reasons You Need to Consider Hiring a Pest Control Company

Most people’s first reaction to pests in their home is to try to take care of the issue themselves because they think it’s easier and quicker than calling professionals. Further, when people do these DIY pest control efforts, they are only temporary and only mask the problem for a short period of time.

Only when the pests come back a second or third time are pest control experts called. By this time, diseases have been spread and allergens have emerged. Instead, as soon as you see signs of pests in your home, call your local pest control experts near mid-Missouri. This will help you get on top of the issue right away and prevent the danger of lingering pests.

A B Pest Control has compiled a list of five important reasons to call your pest control experts sooner rather than later.

1. Time and Effort
One of the number one reasons people try to take care of pests themselves is because they believe it will be quicker and easier to take care of the pests themselves. However, if you think back to a time, you’ve ever tried to defeat pests yourself, there’s a lot of time and effort that goes into it – buying traps, setting them out, trying to scout them out, cleaning up droppings, etc.

Yes, it might take a day or two to get an expert to your home, but that’s also about the same amount of time your method probably would have taken effect.

2. Cost
Experts are called experts for a reason. The amazing thing about pest experts is they are equipped with very specific equipment to get rid of different types of pests.

Additionally, after all the times you’re going to have to buy equipment and traps to get rid of pests, it will end up costing more than the amount it would have costed you to hire an expert to begin with.

3. Health Concerns
Different pests trigger different health concerns ranging from bed bugs to salmonella. With all these different allergens and diseases these pests carry, it’s difficult to get rid of what they leave behind. It’s not something the common resident knows how to do. Again, a perfect job for the professionals.

4. Prevent Recontamination
Yes, you may have accomplished exterminating all or most of the pests from your property, but have you prepared yourself for recontamination? Do you know where and what to check for, in this instance? Probably not. To avoid a whole new army of pests, call professionals.

5. Prevent Property Damage
Not all pests are going to harm your property significantly right away. However, without treatment, pests can destroy property. Additionally, pests are capable of multiplying at a very quick rate. It’s best to take all precautions possible to avoid any type of long-term damage. Pest professionals are able to determine how to strategize the least possible damage.

Again, it’s common for most homeowners to get away without calling professionals, however, they deal with a lot of long-term effects. In terms of costs, health, and property damage, it may be extremely beneficial to contact your local pest control professionals. A B Pest Control is more than happy to help with your pest concerns and wishes you a great start to the fall.

'Tis the season for holiday spirit, spending time with family and friends, giving, and indulging in deliciously sinful treats! That's one of the best things about the holidays - all the delightful snacks and meals you don't typically get throughout the year. In the spirit of Christmas, we at A B Pest Control & Insulation want to share with you 5 scrumptious Christmas cookie recipes that Santa will LOVE!

1. Gingerbread Man Cookies
You simply can't go wrong with this classic! They're the perfect make-ahead cookies that'll be a hit at any holiday event.

Ingredients:
1/2 cup butter, softened
3/4 cup packed dark brown sugar
1/3 cup molasses
1 large egg, room temperature
2 tablespoons water
2-2/3 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons ground ginger
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/2 teaspoon ground allspice
Frosting of choice

Directions:
Cream butter and brown sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in molasses, egg and water. In another bowl, whisk together remaining ingredients minus frosting; gradually beat into creamed mixture. Divide dough in half. Shape each into a disk; cover. Refrigerate until easy to handle, about 30 minutes.

Preheat oven to 350°. On a lightly floured surface, roll each portion of dough to 1/8-in. thickness. Cut with a floured 4-in. gingerbread man cookie cutter. Place 2 in. apart on greased baking sheets.
Bake until edges are firm, 8-10 minutes. Remove to wire racks to cool completely. Frost as desired.

2. Perfect Sugar Cookies
It doesn't get much more festive than this!

Ingredients:
FOR THE COOKIE DOUGH
3 c. all-purpose flour, plus more for surface
1 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. kosher salt
1 c. (2 sticks) butter, softened
1 c. granulated sugar
1 large egg
1 tsp. pure vanilla extract
1 tbsp. milk
FOR THE BUTTERCREAM FROSTING
1 c. (2 sticks) butter, softened
5 c. powdered sugar
1/4 c. heavy cream
1/2 tsp. pure almond extract
1/4 tsp. kosher salt
Food coloring

Directions:
In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt and set aside.

In another large bowl, beat butter and sugar until fluffy and pale in color. Add egg, milk, and vanilla and beat until combined, then add flour mixture gradually until totally combined.

Shape into a disk and wrap in plastic. Refrigerate 1 hour.

When ready to roll, preheat oven to 350ยบ and line two baking sheets with parchment paper. Lightly flour a clean work surface and roll out dough until 1/8” thick. Cut out shapes and transfer to prepared baking sheets. Freeze 10 minutes (so your shapes hold while baking!).

Meanwhile, make frosting: In a large bowl using a hand mixer, beat butter until smooth, then add powdered sugar and beat until no lumps remain. Add cream, almond extract, and salt and beat until combined.

Bake cookies until edges are lightly golden, 8 to 10 minutes.
Let cool, then frost and decorate as desired.

3. Christmas Pinwheel Cookies
These taste just as good as they look.

Ingredients:
2 1/4 c. all-purpose flour
1 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. kosher salt
1 c. (2 sticks) butter, softened
1 c. granulated sugar
1 large egg
3/4 tsp. almond extract
Red food coloring
Sprinkles

Directions:
In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt. In a large bowl using a hand mixer (or in the bowl of a stand mixer, fitted with a paddle attachment), beat butter and sugar together. Add egg and beat until incorporated, then add extract. Add dry ingredients and beat until just combined.

Divide dough in half, keeping one half in mixing bowl. Add red food coloring and mix until desired color is reached. Shape each dough into a square that is roughly ½” thick. Wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate until firm, about 30 minutes.

Place red dough between two sheets of parchment paper and roll into a rectangle that’s about 1/4" thick. Repeat with white dough. Take top sheet of parchment paper off of each dough. Place red dough on top of white dough, dough sides facing each other. Gently press on top of dough to help seal together.

Remove top parchment paper and trim sides to match up evenly. Starting on a long side, use the bottom parchment paper to help roll dough tightly in to a log. Roll log on the counter a few times to help seal the edge. Wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate until firm, at least 1 hour and up to overnight.
Preheat oven to 350°. Line 2 large baking sheets with parchment paper. Place sprinkles on a medium plate. Using a sharp knife, slice cookies 1/2” thick and roll edges in sprinkles. Place on baking sheets 2” apart.

Bake until edges are set and just starting to turn golden, 10 minutes.

4. Santa's Trash Cookies
Even Santa has a naughty side, and these delicious cookies will have him begging for more!

Ingredients:
1 c. (2 sticks) butter, softened
1/2 c. granulated sugar
1/2 c. packed brown sugar
1 large egg
2 tsp. pure vanilla extract
2 1/4 c. all-purpose flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1/4 tsp. kosher salt
3/4 c. crushed potato chips
3/4 c. crushed pretzels
1 1/4 c. semi-sweet chocolate chips
1/2 c. red and green sprinkles
Flaky sea salt, for garnish

Directions:
Preheat oven to 350ยบ and line two baking sheets with parchment. In a large bowl using a hand mixer, cream together butter and sugars until light and fluffy, 3 to 4 minutes. Beat in egg and vanilla until combined.

In another large bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, and salt until combined. Add dry ingredients to wet and mix until just combined.

Gently fold in most of the potato chips, pretzels, chocolate chips, and sprinkles (reserve some for pressing on tops of cookies).

Using a medium cookie scoop, scoop balls of dough (about 2 tablespoons each) onto prepared baking sheets. Press down lightly on each cookie to flatten, then press remaining potato chips, pretzels, chocolate chips, and sprinkles on top. Sprinkle with flaky salt.

Bake until edges are just starting to get golden, 14 minutes.
Remove from oven and let cool 2 to 3 minutes, then transfer to cooling rack to cool completely.

5. Peppermint Patty-Stuffed Chocolate Cookies
Everyone will love the surprise hidden inside this stuffed cookie.

Ingredients:
1 box chocolate cake mix
1 tsp. baking powder
2 large eggs
1/2 c. canola oil
14 York Peppermint Patty Minis
Sprinkles, for decorating

Directions:
Preheat oven to 350° and line two baking sheets with parchment paper. In a large bowl, whisk together cake mix and baking powder; in another bowl, whisk together eggs and oil. Add wet ingredients to dry and stir until fully combined.

Using your hands, form small balls of dough. Flatten a ball, then place a Peppermint Patty in the center and fold dough over to completely cover. Transfer to baking sheet and repeat with remaining dough (you should have enough for about 14 cookies).

Top with sprinkles and bake until cooked through, 8 to 10 minutes. Let cool slightly on baking sheet, then transfer to a wire rack to let cool completely.

Christmas Tree Pests to Keep an Eye Out for

Thanksgiving is behind us, and for many, that means it's time to break out the Christmas dรฉcor and get into the holiday spirit! One thing we all look forward to this time of year is putting up that gorgeous lighted Christmas tree. If you're one of those people who prefer a live tree over a fake one, you know there's nothing like the smell of a fresh cut Christmas tree to get you in the holiday spirit.

However, when you bring in a real or cut tree, you could be inviting insects to spend the holidays with you and your family, including spiders, mites and beetles. These insects could remain on the tree into the winter and could become active after being introduced to the warm temperatures inside your home. Your Lake of the Ozarks pest control company has all the information you need to know about Christmas tree insects.

Insects That Live In Christmas Trees
There are many different insects that can call your Christmas tree home from aphids and mites to spiders and beetles. Although insects may not be active during the winter months, they could lay eggs in Christmas trees. When a Christmas tree that has eggs is introduced into your warm home, they could hatch mistaking the warmth for spring. Although these insects typically don't do physical damage to your home, they can become an unwanted house guest(s) throughout the holiday season, especially if the tree you bought has eggs that hatched.

Aphids
Aphids are soft-bodied insects that use their piercing sucking mouthparts to feed on plant sap. They can usually be found on the lower boughs of evergreen, pine, balsam fir, spruce, Fraser fir and white fir trees. If you see aphids crawling around on your tree or around your house, to get rid of them but avoid stains, you can simply vacuum them up.

Mites
Commonly found on Douglas fir, pine, white pine, Fraser fir, and spruce trees, mites are tiny red or brown critters that often go unnoticed. The most common sign of mites on a Christmas tree is the discoloration of the needles that they cause. When many mites are present, their damage gives the needles a dusty, rust-colored appearance.

Sawfly
Sawflies are often found on spruce and pine trees, and can be detected by their brown cocoons. Often people mistake these cocoons as old butterfly or moth cocoons and don't remove them thinking they're harmless. Other indications that sawflies are probably present are the reddish-brown, straw-like remains of incompletely consumed needles or the bare twigs stripped of needles.

Bark Beetle
Bark beetles are dark brown or black bugs that burrow themselves in the trunks of Monterey pines, ponderosa, Coulter pines, Jeffery pine, white fir, and juniper trees. These tiny beetles are cylindrical hard bodied red, brown or black bugs that are roughly the size of a piece of rice grain. To identify an infestation, look for small holes and saw dust trails on the trunk.

How To Pick The Right Tree
Harmless or not, you don't want to be spending the holiday season with bugs crawling around the presents. Luckily, there are a few things you can do to help minimize the chances of bringing pests into your home through your Christmas tree. When choosing your perfect pest free tree, inspect it carefully including looking underneath the branches. Look for signs of aphids, adelgids or small insects. Things to look for include trees that have their own "flock", light tan, walnut-size, frothy egg masses and small holes with sawdust trails. Make sure to shake out your tree well to dislodge any hiding critters. Remove any bird nests that may be present as they may contain mites. And trim any branches back that show indication of pest remnants.

Have A Pest-Free Holiday
If your pest infestation goes beyond the tree, it is best to call a professional pest control company at the Lake of the Ozarks. From bed bugs to spiders, A B Pest Control & Insulation can make sure your home is pest free for the holidays. A-Z with A B Pest Control & Insulation: Grass Seed/Gnats

At A B Pest Control & Insulation, we offer multiple services for your convenience. From pest control to lawn maintenance and turf management to insulation services, we can handle all of these tasks for you! This week, we'll be continuing our series by discussing two different sectors of our business with A-Z with A B Pest Control & Insulation: Grass Seed & Gnats.

Planting Cool Season Grass Seed
Timing your grass seeding to take advantage of your grass type's natural periods of peak growth helps seed germinate and establish quickly. Your seed gets off to the best possible start and on track for both short- and long-term success. Cool-season grasses such as Kentucky bluegrass, perennial ryegrass and tall fescue, including Kentucky 31 tall fescue, grow most vigorously during the cool temperatures of late summer and early fall.

Time and Temperatures Matter
Several distinct advantages make fall the best time to plant cool-season grass seed. In early autumn, the soil is still warm from months of summer sun. This combination of warm soil, moderate day temperatures and cool evenings encourages fast germination and establishment of newly sown cool-season grass seed. Cool-season grass seed germinates best when soil temperatures are between 50°F and 65°F. This roughly corresponds to daytime air temperatures in the 60°F to 75°F range.

It takes roughly 7 to 14 days for the seeds to germinate, and another 7 to 8 weeks for the grass to get established. By that time, air temperatures have started to get autumnal, cool but not too frosty, just the kind of conditions cool-season grasses love.

Dealing with Gnats
Gnats are tiny flies that are sometimes called blackflies or midges. It is in the diptera order, which includes flies and mosquitoes. They are often seen assembled in large mating swarms. They have long, hair-like antennae, which are more prominent in males.

Gnats are found anywhere rivers or lakes exist because they lay their eggs in watery places. They gather in swarms around bodies of water, but can be found indoors as well. They often congregate around dock and porch lights as well, which is why we often see spiders in these areas as midges are their main source of food.

They feed off of warm-blooded animals to survive, but unlike mosquitoes, gnats usually don’t bite through clothing. They can crawl into hair or under clothing though to get to places such as the ankles and waist lines of pants.

How to Prevent Gnats
Gnats are pesky little insects, especially when they have entered your home. There are several ways to prevent them from coming inside:
  • Get rid of their food supply. Make sure you clean the kitchen and/or dining room regularly. Do not leave left over food sitting out. Make sure you store your food in an air tight container.
  • Cover trash cans. Avoid keeping bags of trash overnight. Clean the indoor trashcan often. Wipe down the lids and sides with bleach – it will kill the gnats instantly.
  • Do not overwater house plants. If there is too much water in the house plants, gnats could lay their eggs in the soil. Make sure you keep an eye on the soil and make sure it is damp as opposed to wet.
  • Check for damp places. Check underneath the sink and other places that water could collect. Gnats love moist places.
If you have taken all preventative measures, but still have gnats hanging around, call your Lake of the Ozarks pest control company.

If you have unwanted pests around your house or would like help getting your lawn ready for next spring, give your Lake of the Ozarks pest control company a call! From pest control to lawn maintenance and insulation services - A to Z, we cover it all!

5 Tips for Preventing & Controlling an Asian Beetle Swarm Infestation

Last week, we discussed some interesting facts about ladybugs, and how they can benefit the economy. While ladybugs are considered to be beneficial, and often enjoyable, their look-alike, the Asian Lady beetle, tends to get confused often and gives ladybugs a bad rap. In the late fall and early spring months, they tend to show up in swarms and can become a real nuisance to homeowners. So, in preparation of the potential swarm of Asian Lady beetles, we at A B Pest Control & Insulation wanted to share some tips to prevent them from taking over your home!

5 Tips for Preventing & Controlling a Swarm Infestation

1. Seal cracks around windows, door frames, and utility pipes with silicone caulk to close up entry points. Special attention should be paid to areas of the home that get the most sun, as ladybugs and Asian Lady beetles are attracted to the warmth.

2. Trimming shrubbery and branches away from a home's exterior can also help to prevent Asian Lady beetles from gaining access.

3. If you don’t want Asian Lady beetles anywhere near your home or garden, or you don’t want to go through the effort of planting an entire garden, try planting or potting some mums. Asian Lady beetles do not like mums and will avoid them.

4. Cloves or bay leaves are two spices that Asian Lady beetles can’t stand. Place these spices near windows and other infested areas to shoo away your beetle infestation.

5. If these pesky beetles have already entered a home, homeowners can use a vacuum to remove them, but it is important to dispose of the bag outdoors to prevent the insects from crawling out. Do not squish them, as they will secrete an odor that could attract more!

Call A B Pest Control & Insulation for Your Pest Control Needs!
Most people like ladybugs because they are pretty, graceful, and harmless to humans. But if you've determined that what you thought was a few harmless ladybugs, turns out to be an annoying swarm of Asian Lady beetles, we hope these tips will help you get control of the problem. While they can be enjoyable to watch, an infestation of them can become a real nuisance. So, we hope this list of tips will help you to better prevent and control an infestation! The next time you’re dealing with pests, call up the best pest control service at the Lake of the Ozarks to take care of your pesky pest problems.

8 Surprising Facts About Ladybugs

There are about 5,000 different species of ladybugs in the world. These much loved critters are also known as lady beetles or ladybird beetles. While most of the time, they are considered to be lucky, and often enjoyable, these insects do tend to show up in swarms at certain times of the year and can become a real nuisance to homeowners. However, although a swarm of them can be annoying at times, they serve a great purpose in our ecosystem. So, we at A B Pest Control & Insulation wanted to share some interesting facts you may not have known about them!

7 Surprising Facts About Ladybugs

1. The ladybug life cycle begins when a batch of bright-yellow eggs are laid on branches near food sources. They hatch as larvae in four to 10 days and then spend about three weeks feeding. Once they're well-fed, they'll begin to build a pupa, and after seven to 10 days they emerge as adults. The insects typically live for about a year.

2. Ladybug larvae look nothing like a ladybug! As larvae, they have long, pointed abdomens, spiny bodies, and legs that protrude from their sides. The larvae feed and grow for about a month, and during this stage they often consume hundreds of aphids.

3. Technically, they're lady beetles, not bugs. What's the difference? For starters, bugs have needle-like mouth parts whereas beetles have chewing mouthparts. Plus, beetles have harder wings than bugs do (if they have them at all). Also, bugs have a mostly liquid diet and beetles don't.

4. Most commonly, ladybugs are red and black or yellow and black, but some are as plain as black and white, others as exotic as dark blue and orange. Some species of ladybug are spotted, others have stripes, and still others sport a checked pattern. Color patterns are connected to their habitat.

5. Ladybugs are colorful for a reason. Their markings tell predators: "Eat something else! I taste terrible." When threatened, the bugs will secrete an oily, foul-tasting fluid from joints in their legs.

6. Farmers and gardeners love them because they eat aphids and other plant-eating pests. One ladybug can eat up to 5,000 insects in its lifetime! But they don't just eat aphids. They also eat fruit flies, thrips, mites and other plant-damaging insects.

7. The 'Lady' Part of Their Name is Said to Refer to the Virgin Mary. According to the Lost Ladybug Project: "During the Middle Ages in Europe, swarms of aphids were destroying crops. The farmers prayed to the Virgin Mary for help, and help came in the form of ladybugs that devoured the plant‐destroying pests and saved the crops. The grateful farmers named these insects 'Our Lady’s beetles,' a name which had endured to present day."

8. Often confused, ladybugs and Asian lady beetles are similar, but NOT the same! Asian lady beetles are typically somewhat more aggressive than native varieties and may bite if they land on the skin. At a quick glance, it can be hard to tell the difference between the Asian ladybug and the native ladybugs. But if you look closely, you will see the Asian ladybug has a white marking behind its head in the openings of what looks like a black M. These are typically the 'lady beetles' you see that invade homes in swarms.

Ladybugs Are Amazing Critters!
Most people like ladybugs because they are pretty, graceful, and harmless to humans. But as you have now learned, they also serve as an important part of the ecosystem by cleaning up pests and plant-damaging insects! We hope this list of facts will help you to better appreciate these interesting insects!

While it is our job to provide pest control at the Lake of the Ozarks, it's also our duty to educate you on the insects that are not technically pests, but merely there. However, the next time you’re dealing with destructive pests, call up the best pest control service at the Lake of the Ozarks to take care of your pesky pest problems

Homeowners: Get Ready for the Fall Invasion!

As Summer winds down and the temperatures begin to cool off, bugs, rodents and other pests will be seeking refuge for the coming winter months. Will they find it in your home? By continuing to be proactive in your pest prevention and lawn maintenance, you can prevent these unwanted pests from making themselves cozy in your humble abode. Here are a few things you need to do to protect your home from a Fall invasion.

It's Time to Prep Your Lawn for Spring
Fall is the best time to start making corrections to your lawn in preparation for next Spring. Compact soil prevents grass from establishing a healthy root system and it keeps water and fertilizer from reaching the roots. Aeration can help relieve soil compaction, which allows the nutrients in the fertilizers and water to reach the soil, allowing your grass to grow healthier. Fall is a great time to aerate and fertilize your lawn as temperatures are beginning to drop, making the soil's temperature perfect for germination.

Keep those Fallen Leaves Raked Up
As the days get shorter, trees will begin shedding their leaves as they enter survival mode to prepare for the colder months. These leaves end up on the ground and all over your yard, and become a safe haven for many pests. When it comes to preventing pest infestation, raking up and disposing of your leaves is one of the most important things you can do this fall. It's important to rake up your leaves, not only to help prevent pests but also for the health of your lawn. When your lawn is covered in dead and decaying leaves, lawn maintenance becomes almost nonexistent. Having a lawn covered in leaves makes it hard to reseed and fertilize. This can lead to dead spots and it will show in your yard when spring comes around.

Prevent Pests from Getting into Your Home
Mice and other rodents may try to begin entering your home looking for a warm shelter with food and water through any small crack or hole. Access points can be anything from a pipe or vent to a broken seal around a window or door. They can chew through insulation and other easy access points. Inspect your home for any place you think a mouse could get through. Ensure all window and door frames, as well as utility pipes that lead to the outside, are sealed tightly. If you have screens on your windows or doors, make sure they're intact and repair them if necessary.

Protect Your Home from a Fall Invasion with A B Pest Control & Insulation
While it may be tempting to let nature do its thing this Fall, remember that a poorly maintained lawn can become a pest's breeding ground. In turn, this could be misconstrued as a welcoming invite for those pests to enter your humble abode. If you have any unwanted critters in your home or need assistance maintaining your lawn this Fall, call A B Pest Control & Insulation at 573-964-1100. By calling a professional, you can make sure these pests are removed and your home's premises is properly treated and maintained, you can be sure those pests don't come back.
