Got a Termite Problem?

As a homeowner, there are a lot of things that have probably crossed your mind to be concerned about or get preventive maintenance for. Unfortunately, once the home inspection has long passed, termite prevention probably isn’t of the highest priorities. After all, the inspector didn’t find any termites 6 years ago when you bought the place, so surely you’re still in the clear, right?

Picture this Scenario
It’s too cold to do much outside, so you decide to finally tackle that home improvement task you’ve been putting off to paint your bedroom. You’ve picked out the color, acquired all the items necessary to complete the job, all that’s left to do is move your furnishings to one side of the room and get started.

In the midst of moving your dresser, you accidentally knock a hole in the wall – oops! Good thing you’re a hard-knock expert at small wall repairs! Moving along, because you’ll fix the hole after you finish painting the first wall, you begin prepping. As you’re laying the last of the paint tape and plastic down and cracking open that fresh can of beautiful sea foam green color you picked out, something flitters past your face. You don’t think much of it, swatting it away, and dip your roller into the freshly poured paint.

As you take the first swipe with the roller, something else flits across your face and you swat again. This time, whatever it was lands in that freshly rolled paint… a flying ant?! Uhhh… A flash of fear washes over you as your thoughts collect and reality sets in. You slowly turn around to gawk at that hole in the wall. To your dismay – those ‘flying ants’ aren’t actually flying ants at all… but termites awakening from their colony tucked behind the wall you just knocked a hole into!

Oh. My. Goodness! Your first instinct is to set the house on fire, but that seems a bit irrational, doesn’t it? They’re just termites… living inside your walls… eating away at the wood holding your home together. Maybe you’ll just patch that hole up and pretend like it never even happened. But that’s not going to solve the problem is it? That’s just putting a cover over a problem so you can pretend like it’s not there. Obviously ignoring the problem isn’t going to make it go away. So, what do you do?

The answer is simple. You’re going to call a certified termite expert. You’re going to call A B Pest Control & Insulation!

Call A B Pest Control – the Certified Termidor® Experts
A B Pest Control & Insulation is a certified Termidor® expert who can help eliminate your termite infestation. They’ve been hiding out in your home going undetected for so long, and it’s time to fight back with the same tactic. Termites can’t avoid what they can’t detect. Termidor is an advanced undetectable liquid technology. That means termites cannot see, smell, taste, or avoid it. Instead, they contact, ingest and share Termidor, completely unaware that doing so inevitably will kill them.

Termidor eliminates termites in several ways. When termites eat Termidor-treated material, they will die. But Termidor doesn’t stop there. It eliminates termites by contact as well. And since termites can’t detect its presence, termites can directly ingest and contact Termidor as they go about their normal routines.

The Termidor “Transfer Effect™”
Whenever a termite ingests or touches Termidor, it can become a “carrier,” transferring Termidor to other termites it contacts. These termites, in turn, can become secondary carriers, behaving normally while they transfer Termidor to other termites they contact—and so on within the colony. Because Termidor is slow-acting, it gives individual termites ample time to transfer it to others in the population. This unique, spiraling process is called the “Transfer Effect,” and its devastating results maximize the protection of your structure.

Protect Your Home From Termites
Annual termite inspections are recommended to help you protect your home because a Lake of the Ozarks pest control company can look for the early warning signs of termites. If you find yourself in a scenario like the one played out above, or termites are found in your home during an inspection, A B Pest Control & Insulation will see what the best service plan for you would be. We offer a 10-year guarantee on our termite control services. Call A B Pest Control & Insulation at 573-964-1100 today to schedule your free termite inspection and get rid of the swarm once and for all!

'Tis the season for holiday spirit, spending time with family and friends, giving, and indulging in deliciously sinful treats! That's one of the best things about the holidays - all the delightful snacks and meals you don't typically get throughout the year. In the spirit of Christmas, we at A B Pest Control & Insulation want to share with you 7 irresistible Christmas treats that'll get you on the nice list!

1. Gingerbread Man Cookies
You simply can't go wrong with this classic! They're the perfect make-ahead cookies that'll be a hit at any holiday event.

Ingredients:
1/2 cup butter, softened
3/4 cup packed dark brown sugar
1/3 cup molasses
1 large egg, room temperature
2 tablespoons water
2-2/3 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons ground ginger
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/2 teaspoon ground allspice
Frosting of choice

Directions:
Cream butter and brown sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in molasses, egg and water. In another bowl, whisk together remaining ingredients minus frosting; gradually beat into creamed mixture. Divide dough in half. Shape each into a disk; cover. Refrigerate until easy to handle, about 30 minutes.

Preheat oven to 350°. On a lightly floured surface, roll each portion of dough to 1/8-in. thickness. Cut with a floured 4-in. gingerbread man cookie cutter. Place 2 in. apart on greased baking sheets.
Bake until edges are firm, 8-10 minutes. Remove to wire racks to cool completely. Frost as desired.

2. Snowman Oreo Balls
This one's fun for the whole family, plus the kids can help out! A small box of these cuties makes a delicious food gift during the holidays.

Ingredients:
1 package (14.3 ounces) Oreo cookies
1 package (8 ounces) cream cheese, softened
1 package (10 to 12 ounces) white baking chips, melted
15 mini Oreo cookies (1.5 ounces)
30 Rolo candies, unwrapped (6.5 ounces)
Assorted sprinkles for eyes, nose and mouth

Directions:
Pulse cookies in a food processor until fine crumbs form. Add cream cheese; pulse just until blended. Refrigerate, covered, until firm enough to shape.

Shape mixture into 1-in. balls; place on waxed paper-lined baking sheets. Freeze, covered, several hours or overnight.

Dip balls in melted chips; allow excess to drip off. Return to pans. Disassemble Oreo cookie sandwiches. Remove and discard filling or save for another use. Top dipped ball with a cookie and attach one Rolo candy to the top of each miniature Oreo with melted white baking chips to make a hat. Let stand until set. Make snowman face with sprinkles. Store in covered containers in the refrigerator.

3. Pistachio Quick Bread
This is a simple, yet divine treat that makes for a great homemade gift, or can be frozen and pulled out for unexpected guests! It's a great staple to have on hand throughout the holidays.

Ingredients:
1 package white cake mix (regular size)
1 package (3.4 ounces) instant pistachio pudding mix
4 large eggs, room temperature
1 cup sour cream
1/4 cup water
1/4 cup canola oil
1/3 cup sugar
3/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Directions:
In a large bowl, combine cake and dry pudding mixes. Add the eggs, sour cream, water and oil; beat until blended (batter will be thick).

Combine sugar and cinnamon. Spoon half of the batter into 2 greased 8x4-in. loaf pans; sprinkle each with 2 tablespoons cinnamon sugar. Spread with remaining batter; sprinkle with remaining cinnamon sugar.

Bake at 350° for 35-40 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Cool for 10 minutes before removing from pans to wire racks.

4. Slow-Cooked Applesauce
This chunky, sweet applesauce is perfect alongside main entrees. Because it's prepared in a slow cooker, you can fix it and forget it before you and the family head out for some winter fun.

Ingredients:
6 pounds apples (about 18 medium), peeled and sliced
1 cup sugar
1 cup water
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 cup butter, cubed
2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Directions:
In a 5-qt. slow cooker, combine the apples, sugar, water, salt and cinnamon. Cover and cook on low for 6-8 hours or until tender.

Turn off heat; stir in butter and vanilla. Mash if desired. Serve warm or cold.

5. Orange Gelatin Pretzel Salad
Salty pretzels pair nicely with the sweet fruit in this refreshing layered salad. It’s a family favorite that is a slam-dunk at potlucks.

Ingredients:
3/4 cup butter, melted
1 tablespoon plus 3/4 cup sugar, divided
2 cups finely crushed pretzels
2 cups boiling water
2 packages (3 ounces each) orange gelatin
2 cans (8 ounces each) crushed pineapple, drained
1 can (11 ounces) mandarin oranges, drained
1 package (8 ounces) cream cheese, softened
2 cups whipped topping
Optional: Additional whipped topping and mandarin oranges

Directions:
Preheat oven to 350°. Mix melted butter and 1 tablespoon sugar; stir in pretzels. Press onto bottom of an ungreased 13x9-in. baking dish. Bake 10 minutes. Cool completely on a wire rack.

In a large bowl, add boiling water to gelatin; stir 2 minutes to completely dissolve. Stir in fruit. Refrigerate until partially set, about 30 minutes.

Meanwhile, in a bowl, beat cream cheese and remaining sugar until smooth. Fold in whipped topping. Spread over crust.

Gently spoon gelatin mixture over top. Refrigerate, covered, until firm, 2-4 hours. To serve, cut into squares. If desired, top with additional whipped topping and oranges.

6. Cherry Chiffon Gelatin
This is a beautiful salad or dessert, but beware. Once you've made this, they'll ask for it again and again!

Ingredients:
2 packages (3 ounces each) cherry gelatin, divided
1-1/2 cups boiling water, divided
2 cups cold water, divided
1 can (15 ounces) pitted dark sweet cherries, drained
2 cups whipped topping

Directions:
In a large bowl, dissolve 1 package of gelatin in 3/4 cup boiling water. Add 1 cup cold water; stir. Refrigerate until partially set, about 1 hour. Stir in cherries. Pour into a 7-cup mold coated with cooking spray. Refrigerate for 1 hour or until firm.

In a small bowl, dissolve remaining gelatin in remaining boiling water. Stir in remaining cold water. Refrigerate until partially set, about 1 hour. Fold in whipped topping. Carefully spread over top. Refrigerate for 4 hours or until firm. Unmold onto a serving platter.

7. Fireball Pumpkin Pie
There's pumpkin pie, and then there's this! This fireball pumpkin pie recipe takes the traditional fall dessert to a whole new level. Prepare your taste buds for this deliciousness with a kick!

Ingredients:
2 large eggs, room temperature
1 can (15 ounces) pumpkin
1 cup half-and-half cream
3/4 cup sugar
1/4 cup packed brown sugar
3 tablespoons Fireball cinnamon whiskey
1/2 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice
1/4 teaspoon salt
Pastry for single-crust pie (9 inches)
Sweetened whipped cream and cinnamon, optional

Directions:
Pastry for single-crust pie (9 inches): Combine 1-1/4 cups all-purpose flour and 1/4 tsp. salt; cut in 1/2 cup cold butter until crumbly. Gradually add 3-5 Tbsp. ice water, tossing with a fork until dough holds together when pressed. Wrap and refrigerate 1 hour.

Preheat oven to 425° In a large bowl, combine the first 8 ingredients; beat until smooth. Line a 9-in. pie plate with pastry; trim and flute edges. Pour filling into crust.

Bake 15 minutes. Reduce heat to 350°. Bake 45-50 minutes longer or until crust is golden brown and top of pie is set (cover edges with foil during the last 15 minutes to prevent overbrowning if necessary). Cool on a wire rack for 1 hour. Refrigerate overnight or until set. If desired, serve with whipped cream and sprinkle with cinnamon.

A-Z with A B Pest Control & Insulation: Attics & Ants

At A B Pest Control & Insulation, we offer multiple services for your convenience. From pest control to lawn maintenance and turf management to insulation services, we can handle all of these tasks for you! To showcase our experience in knowledge in all things pest and insulation relation, we've decided to start a new series to cover all the A-Zs of pest control and insulation that A B Pest Control & Insulation can help you with! This week, we'll be starting with A-Z with A B Pest Control & Insulation: Attics & Ants.

Protecting Your Attic

It's definitely starting to feel a lot like winter, and your heating bill is probably beginning to reflect the work your furnace is putting in. Air leaks in your attic increase heating and cooling bills by letting unconditioned air in and conditioned air out. Moisture can also enter through cracks, impacting home durability and indoor air quality. Sealing and installing a good quality insulation can protect the attic from moisture and improve your home's efficiency. Loose-fill or batt insulation is typically installed in an attic. Loose-fill insulation is usually less expensive to install than batt insulation, and provides better coverage when installed properly. Here are a few types of attic insulation we typically recommend.

Three Types Of Attic Insulation

Cellulose Insulation
Cellulose insulation is great for insulating empty spaces, such as attics and crawl spaces. Cellulose insulation is thick, dense, and clumpy, with a consistency much like down feathers. The chief value of this shape and size is that the insulation can fit in enclosed areas (such as walls) and can conform around obstructions such as wires and ducts (found both in walls and in attics).

Fiberglass Insulation
Fiberglass is a type of fiber primarily composed of glass that is used as a residential and commercial thermal insulator. As an insulator, it slows the spread of heat, cold, and sound in structures. By trapping pockets of air, it keeps rooms warm in the winter and cool in the summer, and thereby serves as a convenient method to increase energy efficiency. Commonly found in blanket form, called batts, it is available in standard pre-cut lengths and widths. Fiberglass insulation also comes as loose fill that can be blown into attic, wall and floor cavities.

Foam Spray
Spray foam insulation offers a dynamic option that is suitable for almost any attic. Attic spray foam insulation has a versatile application method, which gives it a significant advantage over traditional options. It can be applied in narrow areas, blocking gaps and cracks that allow heat transfer. While foam spray insulation is typically a more costly option, it is designed to last and typically requires less cost for repair over the years.

Preventing an Ant Invasion

Ants are one of the most common nuisances homeowners deal with when it comes to pests. While they're more prominent in the spring and summer months, occasionally they find their way into our homes in the fall and winter and make themselves quite comfortable. With the convenience of food and water sources so readily available to them, it's no wonder they're drawn to the indoors during the colder months. Here are some tips to prevent and control ants in your home.

Eliminate The Food Sources
Keeping your kitchen clean and tidy can help discourage ants and other food-loving pests. Wipe down counters and sweep the floors regularly to eliminate any crumbs or anything left behind from spills. Make sure to store leftover food in a tightly sealed container. In addition, if food is left out, it's a good idea to put it away or make sure it's covered to avoid a feast for ants. Finally, use a tightly sealing lid on trash cans and dispose of garbage regularly.

Keep Pet Bowls Clean
Pets can unintentionally invite ants into our homes. Their food and water bowls are an attractant for pests, so be sure to keep pet bowls clean and clean up any spilled food or water promptly. It's a good idea to store dry pet food in a sealed container rather than the paper bag they often come in. If the food is left in the paper bag, it could be an easy access for ants and other pests getting into it. In addition, inspect dog/cat doors to ensure pests cannot get through. Ants can fit through even the tiniest of openings.

Cover Points of Entrance
Take the time to inspect your home to look for easy access points. Trees and bushes should be trimmed away from the home, as they can provide a roadway to your home. Seal any cracks and crevices on the outside of the home with silicone caulk.
