Unusual Valentine's Traditions from around the World

Each year on this day, people exchange cards, candy or flowers with their special “valentine.” Although February 14 has become synonymous with Hallmark throughout the states and in many other parts of the world, not every culture chooses to declare their love via a romantic greeting card or overpriced rose. In honor of the holiday, we at A B Pest Control & Insulation thought it would be fun to share with you some unusual Valentine's Day traditions from around the world!

Bulgaria
Like any other country, Bulgaria celebrates Valentine’s Day in its own style. On February 14, San Trifon Zartan is celebrated in Bulgaria, which means “day of winemakers”. Young and old couples celebrate their love with a glass of wonderful local wine.

Finland & Estonia
Finland and Estonia have a friendlier celebration called Ystävän Päivä in Finnish and Sõbrapäev in Estonian.  February 14 is all about celebrating friendship, and people exchange presents and cards with the greeting ‘Happy Friends Day’.

Japan & South Korea
In Japan & South Korea, it’s the ladies who spoil the object of their affections with chocolates on the 14th of February – and it’s the type of chocolate given that counts. For husbands, boyfriends, or prospective boyfriends, high quality honmei-choco (‘true feeling’) chocolates are hand delivered, while colleagues or acquaintances receive giri-choco, the cheaper ‘obligation chocolate’.

Ghana
In Ghana, February 14 is celebrated as the “National Chocolate Day.” It is a step that the Ghana government took in 2007 to increase tourism in the country. Ghana is among the largest cocoa producing countries in the world. On February 14, one can attend performances, music events, and restaurants have themed menus for the special day.

Norway
Secret admirers pen poems to their beloved, before cutting intricate patterns into the paper and pressing a small white Snowdrop flower inside. The ‘joke’ comes from the letter’s signature – or rather, it’s absence. Instead, budding poets sign off with a dot for each letter of their name. If the lady correctly guesses who her admirer is, she wins an Easter egg at Easter. If not, she has to give him one instead!

Philippines
Every year on February 14, hundreds (sometimes thousands) of couples come together in public places to be married en masse. Often, the celebrations are sponsored by the government as a public service, allowing underprivileged couples the opportunity to tie the knot.

Slovenia
In Slovenia, where St Valentine is one of the patron saints of spring, February 14 marks the first day of working in the fields for the New Year. It’s widely believed that this is the day that plants start to regenerate, and there’s even a proverb that says “St Valentine brings the keys of roots”.

With the nicer weather we've experienced recently and Phil's prediction of an early spring, many homeowners have spring time on their mind. It's almost time to start cleaning out our homes and getting everything ready for the summer season. If you are spring cleaning this year, A B Pest Control & Insulation has 5 tips to help you get ready for an early spring!

1. De-Clutter Your Home
Decluttering makes you more efficient and keeps you organized. But more than that, clutter has psychological influences. It signals to your brain that work isn’t done. Studies have shown that a disorganized home adds to your stress level. The scientific implications of inhaling dust – combined with the psychological stress of coming home to a pile of unsorted laundry or cluttered desk – can take a toll.

2. Get Your Air Ducts Cleaned

7 Irresistible Christmas Treats That'll Get You on the Nice List!

'Tis the season for holiday spirit, spending time with family and friends, giving, and indulging in deliciously sinful treats! That's one of the best things about the holidays - all the delightful snacks and meals you don't typically get throughout the year. In the spirit of Christmas, we at A B Pest Control & Insulation want to share with you 7 irresistible Christmas treats that'll get you on the nice list!

1. Gingerbread Man Cookies
You simply can't go wrong with this classic! They're the perfect make-ahead cookies that'll be a hit at any holiday event.

Ingredients:
1/2 cup butter, softened
3/4 cup packed dark brown sugar
1/3 cup molasses
1 large egg, room temperature
2 tablespoons water
2-2/3 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons ground ginger
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/2 teaspoon ground allspice
Frosting of choice

Directions:
Cream butter and brown sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in molasses, egg and water. In another bowl, whisk together remaining ingredients minus frosting; gradually beat into creamed mixture. Divide dough in half. Shape each into a disk; cover. Refrigerate until easy to handle, about 30 minutes.

Preheat oven to 350°. On a lightly floured surface, roll each portion of dough to 1/8-in. thickness. Cut with a floured 4-in. gingerbread man cookie cutter. Place 2 in. apart on greased baking sheets.
Bake until edges are firm, 8-10 minutes. Remove to wire racks to cool completely. Frost as desired.

2. Snowman Oreo Balls
This one's fun for the whole family, plus the kids can help out! A small box of these cuties makes a delicious food gift during the holidays.

Ingredients:
1 package (14.3 ounces) Oreo cookies
1 package (8 ounces) cream cheese, softened
1 package (10 to 12 ounces) white baking chips, melted
15 mini Oreo cookies (1.5 ounces)
30 Rolo candies, unwrapped (6.5 ounces)
Assorted sprinkles for eyes, nose and mouth

Directions:
Pulse cookies in a food processor until fine crumbs form. Add cream cheese; pulse just until blended. Refrigerate, covered, until firm enough to shape.

Shape mixture into 1-in. balls; place on waxed paper-lined baking sheets. Freeze, covered, several hours or overnight.

Dip balls in melted chips; allow excess to drip off. Return to pans. Disassemble Oreo cookie sandwiches. Remove and discard filling or save for another use. Top dipped ball with a cookie and attach one Rolo candy to the top of each miniature Oreo with melted white baking chips to make a hat. Let stand until set. Make snowman face with sprinkles. Store in covered containers in the refrigerator.

3. Pistachio Quick Bread
This is a simple, yet divine treat that makes for a great homemade gift, or can be frozen and pulled out for unexpected guests! It's a great staple to have on hand throughout the holidays.

Ingredients:
1 package white cake mix (regular size)
1 package (3.4 ounces) instant pistachio pudding mix
4 large eggs, room temperature
1 cup sour cream
1/4 cup water
1/4 cup canola oil
1/3 cup sugar
3/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Directions:
In a large bowl, combine cake and dry pudding mixes. Add the eggs, sour cream, water and oil; beat until blended (batter will be thick).

Combine sugar and cinnamon. Spoon half of the batter into 2 greased 8x4-in. loaf pans; sprinkle each with 2 tablespoons cinnamon sugar. Spread with remaining batter; sprinkle with remaining cinnamon sugar.

Bake at 350° for 35-40 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Cool for 10 minutes before removing from pans to wire racks.

4. Slow-Cooked Applesauce
This chunky, sweet applesauce is perfect alongside main entrees. Because it's prepared in a slow cooker, you can fix it and forget it before you and the family head out for some winter fun.

Ingredients:
6 pounds apples (about 18 medium), peeled and sliced
1 cup sugar
1 cup water
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 cup butter, cubed
2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Directions:
In a 5-qt. slow cooker, combine the apples, sugar, water, salt and cinnamon. Cover and cook on low for 6-8 hours or until tender.

Turn off heat; stir in butter and vanilla. Mash if desired. Serve warm or cold.

5. Orange Gelatin Pretzel Salad
Salty pretzels pair nicely with the sweet fruit in this refreshing layered salad. It’s a family favorite that is a slam-dunk at potlucks.

Ingredients:
3/4 cup butter, melted
1 tablespoon plus 3/4 cup sugar, divided
2 cups finely crushed pretzels
2 cups boiling water
2 packages (3 ounces each) orange gelatin
2 cans (8 ounces each) crushed pineapple, drained
1 can (11 ounces) mandarin oranges, drained
1 package (8 ounces) cream cheese, softened
2 cups whipped topping
Optional: Additional whipped topping and mandarin oranges

Directions:
Preheat oven to 350°. Mix melted butter and 1 tablespoon sugar; stir in pretzels. Press onto bottom of an ungreased 13x9-in. baking dish. Bake 10 minutes. Cool completely on a wire rack.

In a large bowl, add boiling water to gelatin; stir 2 minutes to completely dissolve. Stir in fruit. Refrigerate until partially set, about 30 minutes.

Meanwhile, in a bowl, beat cream cheese and remaining sugar until smooth. Fold in whipped topping. Spread over crust.

Gently spoon gelatin mixture over top. Refrigerate, covered, until firm, 2-4 hours. To serve, cut into squares. If desired, top with additional whipped topping and oranges.

6. Cherry Chiffon Gelatin
This is a beautiful salad or dessert, but beware. Once you've made this, they'll ask for it again and again!

Ingredients:
2 packages (3 ounces each) cherry gelatin, divided
1-1/2 cups boiling water, divided
2 cups cold water, divided
1 can (15 ounces) pitted dark sweet cherries, drained
2 cups whipped topping

Directions:
In a large bowl, dissolve 1 package of gelatin in 3/4 cup boiling water. Add 1 cup cold water; stir. Refrigerate until partially set, about 1 hour. Stir in cherries. Pour into a 7-cup mold coated with cooking spray. Refrigerate for 1 hour or until firm.

In a small bowl, dissolve remaining gelatin in remaining boiling water. Stir in remaining cold water. Refrigerate until partially set, about 1 hour. Fold in whipped topping. Carefully spread over top. Refrigerate for 4 hours or until firm. Unmold onto a serving platter.

7. Fireball Pumpkin Pie
There's pumpkin pie, and then there's this! This fireball pumpkin pie recipe takes the traditional fall dessert to a whole new level. Prepare your taste buds for this deliciousness with a kick!

Ingredients:
2 large eggs, room temperature
1 can (15 ounces) pumpkin
1 cup half-and-half cream
3/4 cup sugar
1/4 cup packed brown sugar
3 tablespoons Fireball cinnamon whiskey
1/2 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice
1/4 teaspoon salt
Pastry for single-crust pie (9 inches)
Sweetened whipped cream and cinnamon, optional

Directions:
Pastry for single-crust pie (9 inches): Combine 1-1/4 cups all-purpose flour and 1/4 tsp. salt; cut in 1/2 cup cold butter until crumbly. Gradually add 3-5 Tbsp. ice water, tossing with a fork until dough holds together when pressed. Wrap and refrigerate 1 hour.

Preheat oven to 425° In a large bowl, combine the first 8 ingredients; beat until smooth. Line a 9-in. pie plate with pastry; trim and flute edges. Pour filling into crust.

Bake 15 minutes. Reduce heat to 350°. Bake 45-50 minutes longer or until crust is golden brown and top of pie is set (cover edges with foil during the last 15 minutes to prevent overbrowning if necessary). Cool on a wire rack for 1 hour. Refrigerate overnight or until set. If desired, serve with whipped cream and sprinkle with cinnamon.

Firewood Pests: Are You Bringing them into Your Home?

There's nothing quite like the warmth of a toasty fire to get rid of a cold chill. If you’ve got a fireplace or a wood stove, you know just what we mean! However, when you bring in wood to keep your fire going, you could be inadvertently bringing pests into your home.

Every tree has the possibility of hosting a number of insects including spiders, mites and beetles. These insects could remain or have found their way on the cords of wood you’ve got stacked outside and could become active after being introduced to the warm temperatures inside your home. Your Lake of the Ozarks pest control company has all the information you need to know about firewood pests and how to prevent them from infesting your home.

Common Firewood Pests

Black Carpenter Ants
Black Carpenter Ants do bite and can spray formic acid, but they do not possess the ability to sting their prey. Most carpenter ant species establish their first nest in decayed wood and later expand or enlarge this into sound wood. Indoors, nests are located in wood (preferably softened by fungus rot or water damage) in insulation, and/or wall voids.

Powderpost Beetles
Powderpost beetles are another wood infesting pest that can cause damage. Signs of an infestation include small round exit holes and very fine piles of dust beneath the exit holes. These wood infesting insects are brought into structures in wood containing their eggs or larvae, such as oak, hickory, ash, and other native hardwoods.

Termites
Termites area another common wood infesting pest. While they primarily forage underground for cellulose, they can find their way into wood cords in an attempt to feed so they can return it to the colony to feed others. It's during these excursions that termites can unknowingly enter your home, possibly leaving a trail of pheromones for the colony to follow. And since many homes are insulated with cellulose (their primary source of nutrients), your home just became a welcoming humble abode for the colony!

Carpenter Bees
Carpenter bees bore holes into decks or other wooden structures. Carpenter bees prefer weathered, unpainted wood, so treating or painting your wooden structures will provide some protection from them. However, that stack of firewood in the back yard could be free game! Once in or near your home, you could experience possible furnishing and deck damage from this hole-boring pest.

How to Prevent an Infestation
Fortunately, there are a few things you can do to help minimize the chances of bringing pests into your home through your firewood. Inspect it carefully. Look for signs of aphids, adelgids or small insects. Things to look for include light tan, walnut-size, frothy egg masses and small holes with sawdust trails.

Before bringing firewood into your home, it is a good idea to shake it vigorously to dislodge any insects and spiders. Check each log for egg cases and prune out any you may find. It is important to get rid of any egg sack, as your home is warm which could induce the eggs to hatch.

The 11th Annual Great Bagnell Dam Duck Drop is happening the weekend in August. Not only is this event a fun chance to win $5,000 for ticket buyers, the proceeds go to Ozark Coast Kiwanis, which supports a variety of local organizations like The Food Pantry, Lake Area Big Brothers Big Sisters and more. The family friendly fun zone opens at 10 am and the ducks “fly” from a helicopter drop at noon below the Bagnell Dam. Watch the rubber duckies race to the finish line to see who wins the prize money!

The 11th Annual Lake of the Ozarks Walk/Run for the Fallen honors American heroes that died during the Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. This event is in coordination with “Run for the Fallen,” a national tribute memorial run. The goal of this memorial run is to collectively have a mile walked or ran in memory of each fallen soldier. This event will be held at the Camdenton Middle School Theater at 9 am and is free and open to the public. Donations are welcome.

On Friday at 8 am the Poker Run will begin at Millstone Mariana. High speed racing power boats will then make multiple stops at some of the lake’s waterfront venues including: Paradise, Redhead’s Lakeside Grill, Larry’s on the Lake and more. The run will end at Shady Gators at 6 pm with an awards ceremony. These boats can be seen racing down the lake in the main channel between the featured restaurants.

This high speed race will be held both Saturday and Sunday starting at Captain Ron’s and then between the 33 to 34.5 MM. Boats from all over the country will be participating in this shootout and can be seen topping 200 mph. Line the side of the main channel to get a front seat view of this incredible race! With over 100 racers and 100,000 spectators, the 31st Annual Lake of the Ozarks Shootout is the largest unsanctioned boat race in the Midwest.

Scorpions in Missouri?

You might be thinking, “Good thing I don’t live in the desert, so I don’t have to deal with scary creatures like scorpions.” They’re creepy and crawly, but at least we don’t have to deal with them in Missouri. Right!? Wrong! Scorpions actually can be found in Missouri and there have been many cases of these sneaky creatures showing up in homes around the Lake of the Ozarks. A B Pest Control & Insulation has the dirt on scorpions—read on to find out more about them.

What are Scorpions?

Are they an insect? Are they an animal? It may be hard for you to classify scorpions off the top of your head. While scorpions share some similarities with insects, they also have differences, which puts them in the arthropod class of animals. Arthropods have an exoskeleton and spiders are also included in this category. Scorpions have large pincers at the top of their body which is used to catch prey like spiders and soft-bodied insects. The end of their tail has a stinger which can be used to defend themselves and also are used to sting larger prey before they eat them. While they likely aren’t going to eat a human, watch out for their stingers. Rarely fatal to humans, they still can inflict pain on their unlucky prey.

Where Can They be Found? 

Scorpions are commonly thought to be found in desert areas, but they are actually spread throughout the United States including Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska and Tennessee. They normally hide during the day underneath objects like stones, logs and loose bark on trees. Scorpions regularly come out at night when it has cooled down outside.

Despite their normal habitat of deserts, they actually don’t like high temperatures or dryness, so this explains why they regularly hide out during the day. If they do make their way into your home, they are likely to be found in crawl spaces and attics. The only scorpion that can be found in Missouri is the striped scorpion. These are a yellow/tan color with two dark bands on the top of their abdomen.

Facts About Scorpions

Scorpions have scary amazing survival abilities. When scorpions are in the wild, they regularly live from two to ten years, but they can live up to 25 years in captivity. They can go a year without eating and can survive 48 hours underwater due to their “book lungs.”  Scorpions birth their young instead of laying eggs and they can be seen carrying their babies around on their back until they are old enough to take care of themselves. Scorpions have very low metabolic rates, allowing them to be able to survive on little food. These creatures will go to desperate measures when they do need food, and have even been known to eat their young.

Are They Dangerous? 

While all species of scorpions do sting, only 25 of the 2,000 species in the world are venomous enough to be dangerous to adults. In the United States, there are is only one venomous scorpions, called the bark scorpion. It can be found in Arizona and their venom isn’t strong enough to be fatal to an adult, though they could be fatal to small children or the elderly. While a scorpion sting will probably hurt, if you’re stung by one in Missouri, it is highly unlikely that it is venomous or that the sting will be fatal.

Anyone can enter for a fun day on Lake of the Ozarks! Visit over 40 of our participating locations on the water to collect your poker hand. Enter the Harbor hop by stopping at any of the check points. To obtain a hand, sign up and pay an optional $20 donation. Any player can enter more than once. The 1st card is drawn at the checkpoint where the hand is purchased; 6 additional cards are obtained by hopping to six more checkpoints drawing one card, per hand, at each location. The hand is complete when the 7th card is drawn. To qualify the hand must be turned in by 7pm at your last checkpoint. Winners will be notified by certified mail. Camdenton Parks in association with the Camdenton Art Advisory Board will host a day focused on the Arts. A kids area will be available where they can create an assortment of art projects to take home with them. Displays of works by local and regional artists and a vendors area where items can be purchased are in the works as well. Performances may include local dance groups, musical acts, poetry readings and theatrical sketches.
