5 Tips To Prevent Rodents This Fall

Seeing a mouse scurry across the floor is not a sight you want to see. Mice and rats aren't just annoying they're also hazardous to your health and well being. Unfortunately, if you see one little mouse scurrying across your kitchen floor, there may be dozens more hiding in the walls of your home.  They multiply fast and adapt easily. Luckily, our Lake of the Ozarks pest control company can help prevent you from seeing these little furry pests in your home.

Mice are not only annoying they can also be dangerous for you and your family. They can bring in insects such as lice, fleas and ticks into your home. They can also transmit different diseases. Rodents can also cause damage to your home by chewing through wiring, insulation and sheet rock. When mice chew through wires, it can be a fire hazard and put your family's safety at risk.

Mice can enter your home looking for a warm shelter with food and water through any small crack or hole. It doesn't have to be big either, as mice can squeeze through an opening the size of a dime. Access points can be anything from a pipe or vent to a broken seal around a window or door. They can chew through insulation and other easy access points. Once a mouse is in your home, they will wander searching for food and a place to build a nest.

5 Tips To Prevent A Rodent Infestation

1. Seal Up Points of Entry
Inspect your home for any place you think a mouse could get through. Ensure all window and door frames, as well as utility pipes that lead to the outside, are sealed tightly. If you have screens on your windows or doors, make sure they're in tact and repair them if necessary.

2. Keep Food In Sealed Containers
Rodents enter your home looking for food, water and shelter. Make sure they don't stick around by removing any food sources. Keep the kitchen tidy and make sure any food is put away in sealed containers.

3. Keep Trash Emptied And Sealed
Don't let the trash can in your kitchen overflow. Regularly take it to an outside trash can that is sealed tightly. It's also a good idea to wash them out every now and then in case anything accidentally spilled out of the bags.

4. Eliminate Water Source
Keep crawl spaces, basements and attics well ventilated and dry. Leaky pipes or clogged drains should also be fixed as they can create the perfect breeding grounds for mice.

5. Inspect Items Before Bringing Them Inside
Mice can be quite sneaky, so it's best to check all items, such as boxes, grocery bags and other packages before bringing them inside to prevent any hitchhikers from making their way into your home.

If you find a rodent infestation in your house, call a Lake of the Ozarks pest control company. It's best to leave situations like this to the professionals as they will know how to properly eliminate your rodent problems and help you take preventative measures to keep them away. For more information or to schedule an appointment, call A B Pest Control & Insulation at 573-964-1100.

All About The Striped Scorpion

Many people are familiar scorpions, as these creatures have been in multiple movies and TV shows. They're often portrayed as dangerous, however, most types of scorpions aren't nearly as potent as Hollywood portrays them to be. Scorpions are one of the earth's oldest land-dwelling organisms, as fossil records show they have been around for more than 400 million years. Although there are several species of scorpions found in the United States, in Missouri, the only naturally occurring species is the striped scorpion.

Striped scorpions vary in color from yellowish to tan. They have two broad black stripes on the upper surface of the abdomen and a dark triangular mark on the front portion of the head. They're nocturnal, but can be seen during the day if they're disturbed from their hiding spot. Although the striped scorpion has a stinger, they rarely sting humans except when they're cornered or pinned. Most scorpions' stings are about the equivalent of a wasp or bee. However, there are some scorpions that do have a lethal sting like the yellow scorpion or "death stalker" that lives in the Middle East.

Scorpions typically hide during the day and are active at night. Although they are usually found in drier habitats, they require moisture and may be attracted to moist areas. They tend to live under boards, stones or other objects like beneath loose bark on trees and logs. They tend to not like extremely high temperatures, so during the summer, they may enter the living areas of a home seeking relief from the heat.

Scorpions tend to hunt for food at night and often prey on pests such as spiders, cockroaches, ants, crickets, beetles and butterflies. They will grab the prey with their pincers and sometimes use their stinger to subdue it. A hungry scorpion may even tackle small mice and lizards.

The best way to keep scorpions from seeking shelter in your home is to remove any piles of trash, stones, boards, firewood and tree limbs. It's also best to seal up any points of entry such as siding, windows, doors, pipes and wires.

Our Lake of the Ozarks pest control technicians can help you with any of the pests infecting the Lake area from spiders to scorpions. If you're ready to have a pest free home, call A B Pest Control & Insulation at 573-964-1100.

Controlling Weeds This Summer

Although the extreme heat may be killing off your grass, the weeds are still sticking around. The summer heat can be hard on our lawns. However, weeds are much heartier than grass and can withstand the heat much better than grass can. At A B Pest Control & Insulation, our Lake of the Ozarks lawn care services can help you have a weed free yard this summer. Here are a few tips to help you have the best looking lawn even during the late summer season.

1. Mow At The Right Height

If your grass is still growing and hasn't died off during the heat, it's important to make sure to keep mowing, and to mow at the right height. In the summer, it's best to adjust the mower blades higher to leave the grass taller. Taller grass shades soil, which reduces water evaporation and deeper roots. This can help prevent weeds from germinating. It's important to time your mowing as to not cut too much at a time.

2. Keep Watering

For the healthiest grass, water the lawn deeply and infrequently. Lawns need at least one inch of water per week and more when the heat is severe. It's best to water early in the day to reduce evaporation and fungus growth. If your lawn has gone brown and dormant, don't try to "water it back to life". If it goes dormant in the summer, it should stay that way until fall. Don't worry, it should recover once the weather changes.

3. Leave The Clippings, Clean Up The Clutter

When mowing your lawn, it's best to leave the clippings. This will help fertilize your lawn and keep the grass shaded from the sun. Summer activities can leave toys, water games, lawn chairs and other items on the grass. This could result in damage the grass and also create dangerous obstacles while mowing. As much as we love dogs, they don't help much with making sure our lawns look good. Pick up their waste and dispose of it properly to avoid pests for coming into the yard. If their urination is turning the grass yellow, flush the area with water to dilute the urine in the soil.

Call A B Pest Control & Insulation

If you're tired of the weeds popping up in your yard and rock areas, call A B Pest Control & Insulation at 573-964-1100. Weeds are often symptoms of a more serious problem, and at A B Pest Control & Insulation, we can develop a turf management program tailored just for your lawn. In addition to controlling the weeds, we can also treat your lawn and outdoor perimeter for pests that invade and damage your yard, plant beds and gardens.
