8 Fun Facts About Labor Day

We're all excited for the extended time off most of us will be getting with the upcoming Labor Day Weekend ahead! A B Pest Control & Insulation wants to wish you and your family a happy and safe weekend full of all kinds of fun, and very little work. This week, in honor of Labor Day, we thought it'd be fun to share with you some fun facts you may not have known about Labor Day!

8 Fun Facts About Labor Day

  1. The first celebrated US Labor Day was on Tuesday, September 5, 1882 in New York City, planned by the Central Labor Union. Over 10,000 workers marched from City Hall all the way to 42nd Street and then met with their families in Wendel’s Elm Park for a picnic, concert, and speeches.
  2. Historians say the expression “no white after Labor Day” comes from when the upper class would return from their summer vacations and stow away their lightweight, white summer clothes as they returned back to school and work. Wearing white indicated you were still in vacation mode at your summer cottage.
  3. Since Labor Day started as a union holiday, it's important to mention that the number of wage and salary workers belonging to unions was at 14.8 million in 2017. In 1983, the first year for which comparable union data are available, the union membership held 17.7 million union workers.
  4. Oregon was the first state to make Labor Day an official holiday in 1887.
  5. On June 28, 1894, Congress passed an act making the first Monday in September of each year a legal holiday in the District of Columbia and the territories.
  6. Labor Day weekend is considered one of the busiest weekends to travel. According to AAA, travel growth over this weekend has grown. Each year, over 35.5 million people hit the road for Labor Day vacation, roughly 85.8 % by car.
  7. Labor Day is considered to be the end of hot dog season. According to the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council, from Memorial Day to Labor Day, Americans typically consume 7 billion hot dogs.
  8. In 1916 the 8 hour work day was established by the Adamson Act, making it the first federal law regulating work hours in private companies.

There you have it, 8 fun facts about Labor Day. How many of them did you know? Are there any facts about Labor Day we didn't mention that you think is mention-worthy? We hope you've learned something fun today and enjoyed learning a little bit of history about how Labor Day came to be a national holiday. Whatever your plans are this Labor Day weekend, we at A B Pest Control & Insulation hope you have a fantastic time with family and friends! And remember, don't put in the extra hours to keep pests from invading your home, count on us to handle the dirty work for you!
