Flea Infestation and Treatment: Here's What You Need to Know

Have you noticed your pet scratching incessantly lately? Have you checked him for fleas? Even if you have found that your pet does have fleas and have treated them, the problem may persist because the fleas still have a proximal advantage to your home. And remember, fleas can live on your blood, too, not just your pets. This can mean your "minor" flea issue could be much worse than you realize! So, this week, A B Pest Control is sharing with you some information about what is entailed in treating flea infestations.

Where are these Fleas Coming From?
Flea infestations often come from pets bringing them in from outdoors. The pests attach to your pet when its outside, and then infests its fur and the places it sleeps indoors. Other animals such as rodents, raccoons, or feral cats venturing into your yard may be the culprits bringing these pesky pests into your yard. So, the most effective ways to keep fleas from getting inside the home is to eliminate outdoor flea habitats and outdoor hosts. While you can't always prevent these animals from entering your turf, you can be proactive by treating your lawn and pets with flea control products. However, in order to effectively treat for fleas, you'll first need to understand their life-cycle. Let's take a look.

Understanding the Flea's Life-Cycle
There are four stages in the life cycle of a flea: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Depending on the environmental temperature and humidity levels, the total life cycle will take anywhere from a couple weeks to several months, or even years.

1. A single adult female can lay about 40 eggs every day. Eggs take anywhere from two days to two weeks to develop, hatching when environmental conditions are just right for them. Larvae then emerges as the next life stage. 
2. If conditions are favorable, the larvae will spin cocoons in about 5-20 days of hatching from their eggs. This leads to the next life stage, called the cocoon or pupae stage. 
3. This cocoon stage is the last developmental stage before the adult flea emerges. The cocoon protects the pupae for several days or weeks before the adult flea emerges. If environmental conditions are not right for emergence, the cocoon can protect the developing flea for months, and in some cases, years. 
4. The adult flea will not emerge until the presence of a potential host is made obvious - by vibrations, rising levels of carbon dioxide, and body heat. This can be caused by your pet walking by and brushing against the cocoon, or even from you moving around your home.

Unfortunately, this life-cycle means that getting rid of fleas can require more than one treatment to effectively eliminate the problem once an infestation has occurred.

Because "Firebeetle" Doesn't Sound As Appealing

As the weather starts to warm up, we can’t help but daydream about the long summer days that are ahead. About Fireflies

We see them all the time, especially at the Lake of the Ozarks. They come out during the warm summer nights and the provide a light show that is unlike anything else. We may be pretty familiar with lightning bugs, but most people don’t know that these insects are actually beetles. Fireflies are nocturnal members of the family Lampyridae. There are about 2,000 firefly species and they live in a variety of warm environments. Fireflies love moisture and tend to live in more humid regions.

Where fireflies get their name is pretty self-explanatory, but how they produce their glow is a little bit more of a mystery. Fireflies have organs located under their abdomen that are dedicated solely to producing the light. The take in oxygen and, inside of special cells, that oxygen is combined with a substance called luciferin that produces light with virtually no heat.

The light of a firefly is usually intermittent, and each flash pattern is unique to each species. The firefly using their blinking patterns as an optical signal which helps them find potential mates. Scientists are still unsure of how fireflies regulate the process of turning their lights on and off.

Firefly Fun Facts

They aren’t flies – they are beetles.

Fireflies are members of a family of insects within the beetle order Coleoptera (winged beetles). Hey, we’re okay with calling them fireflies instead of “firebeetles”.

They are as efficient as they come.

It’s pretty safe to say that fireflies are light geniuses. The light that is produced by a firefly is the most efficient light ever made. Nearly 100 perfect of the energy in the chemical reaction is emitted as light. If we compare their light to an incandescent light bulb, the light bulb only emits about 10 percent of its energy as light. The other 90 percent is lost as heat.

They eat weird things.

While most of us believe that fireflies nibble on flowers, the larvae of the lightning bug is actually a carnivore. They feast on slimy slugs, worms, and even snails. Once they grow up, some even move on to cannibalism and eat other fireflies. Most of them stick to pollen and nectar.

Do You Have A Skunk Problem?

Skunks are one of those creatures that are somewhat misunderstood. Skunks may be portrayed as cute and cuddly creatures in cartoons, but A B Pest Control & Insulation knows that skunks can actually be a real nuisance. If you have any trees that drop nuts or fruits, it’s important to clean up anything that has fallen or that is on the ground to help eliminate any food sources for a skunk and other critters. If you feed your pets outside, you’ll want to make sure that you bring their food and water bowls in before dark. This will also help deter critters and skunks from coming into your yard.

Check for Possible Den Areas

Skunks, like other pests, are opportunists. This means that they will make their dens in places that other animals have abandoned. Skunks are also great diggers, they will easily be able to dig a den under structures. In order to help deter skunks from taking residence in your yard, you should make sure they don’t have access to abandoned burrows and they can’t easily create one around the base of your home. There are steps you can take to ensure they can’t burrow below your home, but it’s best to leave that up to a professional.

This “unbearable” event is a unique opportunity to show your bravery as you support local Special Olympics athletes by plunging into the frigid winter waters. Proceeds benefit Special Olympics Missouri. SOMO exists to provide year-round sports and training opportunities for individuals with intellectual disabilities and our athletes need you to get involved.

Participants must be at least 10 years old and raise a minimum of $75 each by event day. The Polar Plunge is a project of the Law Enforcement Torch Run(R) for Special Olympics Missouri. Osage Beach PD is proud to host this event.

Plunge doesn’t end at the beach. There will be a Plunge After Party from 4:00 pm – 7:00 pm at Tan-Tar-A. This year special guest Kricket Alley will be performing along with the best silent/live auction. Appetizers, 2 drink tickets, entertainment by one of the best bands at the Lake and loads of fun will be free for Polar Plungers and $10 for guests.
