What You Need to Know About Lawn Aeration

In order to achieve and maintain a beautiful lawn, A B Pest Control and Insulation truly believes that you should implement basic lawn care practices. These include properly mowing, fertilizing and watering. On top of that, it is also important that nutrients can penetrate the grass and reach the soil beneath it. Aeration can be a crucial step to making sure your lawn is healthy because it allows air and water to penetrate built-up grass or lawn thatch. The best lawn service company at the Lake of the Ozarks has put together some information to help you get your yard in tip-top shape.

What is Aeration?

Aeration involves perforating the soil with small holes. These small holes allow air, water and nutrients to penetrate the grass roots. By doing so, it helps the roots grow deeply which then produces a stronger, more substantial lawn. The main reason for aerating is to alleviate soil compaction. When the soil is densely compacted, it prevents proper circulation of air, water and nutrients within the soil. Excess lawn thatch or heavy organic debris buried under the grass surface can also starve the roots from these necessary elements. Aeration is commonly called “core aeration” in the lawn service industry, and you may have heard of it as soil cultivation.

What are the Benefits?

Aeration can help make your lawn healthier and also reduce the maintenance requirements because of these benefits:
  • Improved air exchange between the soil and atmosphere
  • Enhanced soil water uptake
  • Improved fertilizer use and uptake
  • Reduced water runoff and puddling
  • Stronger turfgrass roots
  • Reduced soil compaction
  • Enhanced heat and drought stress tolerance
  • Improved resiliency and cushioning
  • Enhanced thatch breakdown

Is Aeration Necessary?

Yes! Compact soil prevents grass from establishing a healthy root system and it keeps water and fertilizer from reaching the roots. Walking, playing, and mowing will compact your lawn's soil. Aeration can help relieve this soil compaction, which allows your grass to grow healthier. For most lawns, annual aeration is enough to keep the soil from becoming too compacted. For lawns with heavy use, twice a year would be ideal.

Lawn Renovation

Lawn renovation involves restoring a deteriorated turfgrass area. Depending on the condition of the turf, this process may be accomplished without having to establish a new lawn. The first step in lawn renovation is to correct the primary cause of turf deterioration. Things that may contribute to poor turf include:
  • Drought
  • Excessive shade
  • Poor drainage
  • Soil compaction
  • Inadequate fertility
  • Weed or insect infestation
  • Thatch buildup
  • Improper mowing
  • And many others

Most of these problems can be corrected by renovation, proper turfgrass selection, and improved maintenance practices.

Every yard is different and it’s important to have a proper lawn management program that is tailored to your unique yard. A B Pest Control and Insulation has a formula for success for your lawn. The best lawn service company at the Lake of the Ozarks can evaluate your lawn’s needs and put it on a regular maintenance schedule so that it stays healthy throughout the year. If your lawn is in need of some help, visit our website or give us a call today. We would love to get your yard back on track!

The Gift of Freedom

With the recent anniversary of the horrific tragedy that occurred on September 11, 2001, this week is a week for remembrance. At A B Pest Control, we wanted to take the time to remember all the lives that were lost that day and to thank those that continue to fight for our country.

A Day That We Will Never Forget

On September 11, 2001, two planes were flown into the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, a third plane hit the Pentagon just outside of Washington, D.C., and the fourth plane crashed in a field in Pennsylvania.

At the World Trade Center, 2,763 people died. This includes 343 firefighters and paramedics, 23 New York City police officers and 37 Port Authority police officers.

At the Pentagon, 189 people were killed, including the 64 on American Airlines Flight 77.

On Flight 93, 44 people died when the plane crash-landed in Pennsylvania.

This is a day that will forever be imprinted on the memory and hearts of all Americans. We are so thankful for all the first responders that put their lives on the line that day as well as each and every day.

The Gift of Freedom

A price is paid so that civilians are granted freedom each day. Freedom continues to be free because of the military service members who have sacrificed for us and continue to sacrifice. They selflessly risk everything so we can continue to live the way we do. We are thankful for our freedom and are thankful for our service members sacrifice. One way we show our gratitude is through Veteran’s Day.

Veterans Day

On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, an armistice was declared between the Allied nations and Germany in the First World War. Commemorated as Armistice Day beginning the following year, November 11th became a legal federal holiday in the United State in 1938. After World War II and the Korean War, Armistice Day became Veterans Day.

Veterans Day is a day we celebrate to pay tribute to all American veterans-living or dead-but especially to give thanks to living veterans who have served their country honorably.

In remembrance of the tragedy that occurred 16 years ago, here at A B Pest Control, we wanted to say thank you to all of the service members and their families that continue to fight for our freedom. It’s because of their sacrifices that we are able to enjoy our freedoms every day.

It Isn't Easy Being a Bat

It's still summer season, which means that bats are still out and about. While you may see them flying around in the night, how much do you really know about these creatures? Bats tend to get a bad rap, but A B Pest Control has put together some interesting facts about these creatures. Hopefully, after reading this list provided by your Lake of the Ozarks pest control company, you will be more acquainted with these flying mammals before they head into winter hibernation.

  • There are 1,100 species of bats worldwide. There are about 40 species of bats in the United States.
  • Bats can live more than 30 years.
  • They can fly at speeds up to 60 mph.
  • Bats can eat up to 1,200 mosquitoes in an hour. They often consume their body weight in insects every night, this helps to keep the bug population controlled.
  • There are only three species of “vampire bats” – a type of bat that lives off the blood of animals. No need to worry, none of these “vampire bats” live in the United States. Vampire bats do not actually “suck” blood. They usually “lap” up about two teaspoons of blood each night with their tongues.
  • More than half of the bat species in the United States are in severe decline or are listed as endangered. Besides loss of habitat, one of the main threats comes from white nose syndrome. White nose syndrome occurs when a fungus, Pseudogymnoascus destructans (Pd), invades the nose, mouth and wings of bats during hibernation. This fungus may lead to dehydration which causes the bats to wake more frequently and to burn their fat reserves. This often leads to starvation.
  • Most bats have only one pup a year. This makes them extremely vulnerable to extinction.
  • Mothers can find their babies among thousands, even millions, of other bats by their unique voices and scents.
  • Bat droppings, which are called guano, are one of the richest fertilizers. Bat guano was once a booming business. Guano was Texas’s largest mineral export before oil.
  • The world’s largest bat is the “flying fox” that lives on the islands in the South Pacific. It has a wingspan of up to 6 feet.
  • The world’s smallest bat is the bumble bee bat of Thailand. It is smaller than a thumbnail and usually weighs less than a penny.

Their habitat –

Bats can live almost everywhere, except in the deserts and polar regions. Bats tend to live in larger groups in caves, trees and under bridges. In Missouri, the gray bats uses caves year round. However, most bat species hibernate in caves in the winter and roost in trees during the summer.

Species of bats in Missouri:

  1. Big Brown Bat
  2. Evening Bat
  3. Tri-colored Bat
  4. Northern Bat
  5. Indiana Bat
  6. Little Brown Bat
  7. Gray Bat
  8. Southeastern Bat
  9. Eastern Small-footed Bat
  10. Eastern Red Bat
  11. Hoary Bat
  12. Seminole Bat
  13. Silver-haired Bat
  14. Rafinesque’s Big-eared Bat
  15. Ozark Big-eared Bat
  16. Brazilian Free-tailed Bat
It’s easy to be hesitant towards these mysterious creatures. Hopefully, after reading these facts and getting to know a little more about bats, you will be happy to see them flying by. While bats help keep insects at bay, you don't want them in your house. Having bats roost in your house or attic can be dangerous for you and your family. At A B Pest Control & Insulation, we try to capture and release the bats that we find in people's attics. It's important for us to keep these creatures in nature and out of people's houses. If you need help getting rid of any bats or unwanted creatures, call your Lake of the Ozarks pest control company. For more information or to schedule an appointment, call A B Pest Control & Insulation at 573-964-1100.
