Are You Ready To Spring Forward?

Most people will be setting their clocks an hour ahead this Saturday before going to bed and we will be losing an hour of sleep. Daylight Saving Time will begin it’s eight-month run this Sunday at 2:00 am. There are a lot of questions and myths that surround Daylight Saving Time and A B Pest Control & Insulation has some fun facts about this mysterious time change.

What is Daylight Saving Time?

First things first, most people tend to call it “daylight savings time” or even “spring forward”. While it essentially means the same, the correct term is Daylight Saving Time. Daylight Saving Time is centered around making better use of the day’s light. This is why an hour of daylight is shifted from the morning to the evening during springtime and vice versa in the fall.

Who’s In Charge Of Daylight Saving Time?

It may come as a surprise, but the Department of Transportation (DOT) is in the charge of daylight saving time and all time zones in the U.S. According to their website, they are in charge of time and time zones “because time standards are important for many modes of transportation”. The DOT says that daylight saving is observed because it saves energy, saves lives by preventing traffic accidents, and also reduces crime. In 2007, the federal government expanded daylight saving time in order to reduce energy consumption. Daylight saving time now accounts for about 65% of the year.

Who Has The Final Say?

While many people may agree about the benefits, not everyone agrees that daylight saving time offers energy-saving benefits. When it comes down to actually observing daylight saving time, it’s purely a state matter. How a state determines that, whether it’s through a law, resolution, or executive order, is up to them. If a state decides to no longer follow daylight saving time, they would just need to let the Department of Transportation, and of course the rest of the world.

There are two states in the U.S. that don’t take part in daylight saving time. Hawaii and most of Arizona. Arizona opted out in 1968, but certain Native American reservations in Arizona still follow daylight saving time. Other places that don’t observe daylight saving time include American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands.

Spring Forward

People might not agree about whether or not daylight saving time is beneficial, but one thing we can agree on is that we will be losing an hour of sleep this Sunday as daylight saving time makes its appearance. A B Pest Control & Insulation wants to remind you to set your clocks ahead an hour before going to bed Saturday night. With the time change and the longer days, if you happen to find creepy crawlers around your home, give your pest control company at the Lake of the Ozarks a call. We’ve got you covered!

Do You Have A Skunk Problem?

Skunks are one of those creatures that are somewhat misunderstood. Skunks may be portrayed as cute and cuddly creatures in cartoons, but A B Pest Control & Insulation knows that skunks can actually be a real nuisance. Not only are skunks smelly creatures, they can fill your yard with holes, and if you have chickens or ducks on your property, they will more than likely go after them. Skunks are also known for carrying several diseases, including rabies. Your pest control company at the Lake of the Ozarks knows there are many reasons you don’t want to have skunks on your property, and with so many of them around lately, we thought we would put together a few tips on how to get rid of them.

Keep Your Yard Clean

Woodpiles or anything similar creates a playground and hiding spot for skunks. Make sure that if you have a woodpile that it is stacked properly and there are no places for a skunk to get in and nest. Skunks are also scavengers and will eat many things that they find on the ground. Things like acorns, nuts, and other fruits that fall to the ground will likely attract a skunk into your yard. If you have any trees that drop nuts or fruits, it’s important to clean up anything that has fallen or that is on the ground to help eliminate any food sources for a skunk and other critters. If you feed your pets outside, you’ll want to make sure that you bring their food and water bowls in before dark. This will also help deter critters and skunks from coming into your yard.

Check for Possible Den Areas

Skunks, like other pests, are opportunists. This means that they will make their dens in places that other animals have abandoned. Skunks are also great diggers, they will easily be able to dig a den under structures. In order to help deter skunks from taking residence in your yard, you should make sure they don’t have access to abandoned burrows and they can’t easily create one around the base of your home. There are steps you can take to ensure they can’t burrow below your home, but it’s best to leave that up to a professional.

Call a Trained Wildlife Professional

When it comes skunks, there are certain means of skunk control that are illegal. It’s best to leave your skunk problem to the specially trained wildlife technicians. If you attempt to DIY this, you could end up harming yourself, getting bitten, or even sprayed by the skunk.

Give A B Pest Control & Insulation a Call

When it comes down to skunk removal, it’s best to call your pest control company at the Lake of the Ozarks who are specially trained and can help take care of your problem. For all of your wildlife and nuisance animal needs, A B Pest Control & Insulation is here to help.

The End of Hibernation

The groundhog’s verdict is in and we will be having six more weeks of winter. Some are happy about this, while others were hoping for an early spring. A B Pest Control & Insulation knows that hibernating animals will soon be making their appearance and we want you to be ready. Your pest control company at the Lake of the Ozarks knows that certain animals will hibernate when the temperatures drastically drop and will reappear with the slightest change in weather. Learn more about hibernation and the animals you may soon find in your yard below.

Hibernation

Groundhog’s Day may have you thinking one thing, but there’s no actual set date for when wildlife will emerge. The end of hibernation will depend on the area you live in as well as each animal’s internal clock. Hibernating animals know when it’s time to start their preparation for hibernation because their brain sends them signals. These signals that are sent out are set off by external factors. Those factors could include how long the sun is out for and the change in temperatures.

When Does Hibernation End

Though there’s no exact date or time when hibernation ends, it can usually be predicted when wildlife will begin to emerge from hibernation. Most hibernating animals wake from their sleep during the spring because that’s when the temperatures get warmer, the sun is out more, and there are more sources of food available. Check out the hibernation time frame for each of these animals:

Groundhogs – out of all the animals that hibernate, groundhogs are usually the first to wake up. Males, according to evidence, can emerge as early as February. They come out of hibernation early to get a jumpstart on finding a mate. They might even go back to sleep for another month after they find their mate.

Bats – there are bats in every state of the country, and when a bat comes out of hibernation is extremely hard to pinpoint. In the Northeast, bats may hibernate for five or six months and emerge around March.  A lot of it depends on weather patterns and the weather in that select area.

Your Trapping Experts

While it may be hard to pinpoint exactly when animals will be coming out of hibernation, A B Pest Control & Insulation knows that it’s important to be prepared. If you have groundhogs or other pesky critters causing problems in your yard, give your Lake of the Ozarks pest control company a call. From trapping to pest control, we’ve got you covered.

Is Your Home Properly Insulated?

Home insulation is an important part of any house. A B Pest Control & Insulation knows that ensuring that your home is properly insulated can help save you money on heating and cooling costs, it absorbs unwanted noises, and can even help reduce exposure to formaldehyde. Your pest control company at the Lake of the Ozarks not only keeps unwanted bugs out of your home, but we can also keep your home comfortable with the proper insulation.

Benefits of Proper Insulation

Lower Energy Costs – one of the most important reasons you should make sure that your home is properly insulated is so you don’t waste energy. Improperly insulated homes can waste both heating and cooling energy in your home by allowing heat transfer. Not only does it cost you more money, but it could also put a bigger strain on your system. There are many different types of insulation and A B Pest Control & Insulation can help you decide what types is best for your home or business.
Reduce Noise Pollution – insulation has sound absorption qualities, so it can reduce unwanted noises that are created by appliances, electronic equipment, or even conversations. It can prevent sounds from being transmitted through the walls and even the floors of your home. Not only does the proper insulation keep unwanted noise at bay, but it also makes it easier for your furnace or air condition to keep the temperature constant without putting a strain on the system.

How Insulation Works

In order to understand how insulation inside of your home works, it helps to understand heat flow. Heat flow involves three basic mechanisms – conduction, convection, and radiation.
Conduction – this is the way that heat moves through materials. For example: when you put a spoon into a cup of hot liquid. The temperature of the liquid heats up the spoon which is then transferred through the spoon handle to your hand.
Convection – this is the way that heat circulates through liquids and gases. It is why warmer air rises (it’s lighter) and cooler air sinks (it’s denser).
Radiant heat – this heat travels in a straight line and heats anything solid that absorbs its energy.

For the most part, most common insulation materials work by slowing conductive heat flow and convective heat flow. Regardless of the mechanism, heat flows from warmer to cooler until there is no longer a temperature difference. In order to maintain comfort, heat that is lost in the winter must be replaced by your heating system and the heat in the summer must be removed by your cooling system. By properly insulating your home, this heat flow will decrease by providing an effective resistance to the flow of heat.

Ensure Your Home Is Properly Insulated with A B Pest Control and Insulation!

The easiest and most efficient way to ensure that your home has the proper insulation levels is to call a professional. A B Pest Control and Insulation can evaluate your home and make the proper recommendations for the best insulation to meet your needs.
