Are There Bedbugs Lurking In Your Home?

You may think that bed bugs can only be found in unkempt apartment buildings and hotel rooms. A B Pest Control & Insulation knows this to be false. They've actually been spotted all over towns and cities, even in the nicest of establishments and homes. These tiny reddish-brown insects are far more widespread than you may realize. Your pest control company at the Lake of the Ozarks is here to better inform you of where to keep your eye out for these pesky and opportunistic creatures and what to do if you come across them.

Although bed bugs can show up just about anywhere, it's less likely that people transport them home when their numbers are low and it's a non-bed environment. Bed bugs generally tend to live within 8 feet of where people sleep. They're also most active in the late hours of the night and tend to hide in the day. Because of this, chances of picking up bed bugs by walking into an infested dwelling, especially during the day, is less likely to occur. Not impossible, though.

Outside of homes nad hotels, there are some spots where bed bugs may be in larger numbers and where you need to be more alert. Here's what you should know:

What a Bed Bug Looks Like
Bed bugs have small, flat, oval-shaped bodies. They are wingless. Adults do have the vestiges of wings called wing pads, but they do not fully develop into functional wings. Adults are brown in color, although their bodies redden after feeding. Full-grown bed bugs move relatively slowly and measure between 4 to 5 mm. Newly hatched nymphs are approximately the size of the head of a pin and are white or tan until they feed. They often are described as being about the size and shape of an apple seed.

Look for Signs
An accurate way to identify a possible infestation is to look for physical signs of bed bugs. When cleaning, changing bedding, or staying away from home, look for:
  • Rusty or reddish stains on bed sheets or mattresses caused by bed bugs being crushed.
  • Dark spots (about this size: •), which are bed bug excrement and may bleed on the fabric like a marker would.
  • Eggs and eggshells, which are tiny (about 1mm) and pale yellow skins that nymphs shed as they grow larger.
  • Live bed bugs.
Where Bed Bugs Hide
When not feeding, bed bugs hide in a variety of places. Around the bed, they can be found near the piping, seams and tags of the mattress and box spring, and in cracks on the bed frame and headboard.

If the room is heavily infested, you may find bed bugs:
  • In the seams of chairs and couches, between cushions, in the folds of curtains.
  • In drawer joints.
  • In electrical receptacles and appliances.
  • Under loose wall paper and wall hangings.
  • At the junction where the wall and the ceiling meet.
  • Even in the head of a screw.
Since bed bugs are only about the width of a credit card, they can squeeze into really small hiding spots. If a crack will hold a credit card, it could hide a bed bug.

Protect Your Belongings
There's little need to keep your eyes constantly on the lookout for bed bugs. It is reasonable to look for signs of them in places where people live and/or sleep, especially where they receive a lot of transitional visitors. If you think there's a problem in your office, school, or another location, then store your handbags, coats and any other items that you'll bring home away from those of other people.

Treat with Heat
If you're concerned that you or someone in your family has brought home a stray bed bug, toss clothes, blankets, and anything else that may have been infected into a hot dryer for 30 minutes. This may work for an occasional bed bug, but it won't work to eliminate an infestation. Only a professional heat treatment will do that.

Call in the Experts if You See Bed Bugs

If you see a bed bug, don't freak out. One bed bug doesn't mean you have an infestation. However, when in doubt, it's best to have an experienced pest control professional come to your home and perform a detailed inspection. Since bed bugs feed on humans while they sleep, they're most commonly found in beds. However, they are resilient critters and will hide in cracks in walls, boxes, clothing and luggage.

Visiting a bed bug infested area may inadvertently result in you bringing them back home with you. If this occurs, get rid of them by scheduling an appointment with A B Pest Control & Insulation. We've got an effective bed bug treatment that is cost-friendly. Call us today at 573-964-1100.

5 Creepy Critters Crawling Around Your Home this Fall

Fall at the Lake of the Ozarks is in full swing and we couldn’t be more excited for cooler weather and beautiful fall foliage. However, many people often have the misconception that with cooler weather comes less pests and a declining need for pest control services. That actually couldn't be further from the truth. Pest control is just as important in the fall as it is any other time of the year. Check out 5 creepy critters you might find crawling around your home this fall.

1. Mice
Mice and other rodents may try to begin entering your home looking for a warm shelter with food and water through any small crack or hole. Access points can be anything from a pipe or vent to a broken seal around a window or door. They can chew through insulation and other easy access points. Inspect your home for any place you think a mouse could get through. Ensure all window and door frames, as well as utility pipes that lead to the outside, are sealed tightly. If you have screens on your windows or doors, make sure they're in tact and repair them if necessary.

2. Termites
Termites are another common pest we see making their way into homes in the fall months. While they primarily forage underground for cellulose, they can find their way into wood cords in an attempt to feed so they can return it to the colony to feed others. It's during these excursions that termites can unknowingly enter your home, possibly leaving a trail of pheromones for the colony to follow. And since many homes are insulated with cellulose (their primary source of nutrients), your home just became a welcoming humble abode for the colony!

3. Snakes
If you have birds in your yard or rodents in your house, you may be attracting snakes onto your property. Although you may not control the birds, you can control the rodent problem. Calling a professional pest control company at the Lake of the Ozarks can help you get rid of the rodents hiding in your walls. Unfortunately, snakes like similar conditions as human. During the summer, they like cool places and during the winter, they like warmer places to hibernate, which is why they may seek your home for shelter. During the fall, you may see more snakes than usual, as they are more active due to the nice weather and they are preparing for hibernation.

4. Bed Bugs
With school back in session and people traveling for the upcoming holidays, it's prime time for bed bugs to migrate. Since they are so resilient and can dwell almost anywhere without a host for so long, they'll find refuge in carpeting, behind light switch and plugin coverings, and floor boards. For bed bugs you'll need to strip off bedding from mattresses as these may contain bugs. Your clothes may possibly be infested with bugs, so you also need to wash these with water at a very high temperature and let them dry in high heat. A professional pest control company at the Lake of the Ozarks should be contacted to treat for bed bugs as they are extremely difficult pests to get rid of and can survive for up to a year without feeding. These pests require chemical treatment as well as high heat treatment, and may require multiple treatments to eradicate the infestation.

5. Cockroaches
While some pests and rodents migrate to warmer climates for the winter months, others may seek places to hide out from the cold or hibernate. Cockroaches are one of those iffy pests that can go either way. The winter months do pose a risk to cockroaches, which will often die when exposed to temperatures less than 15 degrees Fahrenheit. However, cockroaches can find plenty of ways to avoid that exposure and survive the cold months. Because of their unrelenting ability to survive even the harshest conditions, regular pest control treatments during the colder months are essential for controlling cockroaches.

Get Rid of Creepy Critters with A B Pest Control & Insulation!
There are many pests that will go into hibernation within the next few weeks, but several will simply try to seek shelter in the warmth of your home. If you need pest control services this fall or winter, call A B Pest Control & Insulation at 573-964-1100. We can help you keep your home pest free all year round!

5 Tips for Preventing & Controlling an Asian Beetle Swarm Infestation

Last week, we discussed some interesting facts about ladybugs, and how they can benefit the economy. While ladybugs are considered to be beneficial, and often enjoyable, their look-alike, the Asian Lady beetle, tends to get confused often and gives ladybugs a bad rap. In the late fall and early spring months, they tend to show up in swarms and can become a real nuisance to homeowners. So, in preparation of the potential swarm of Asian Lady beetles, we at A B Pest Control & Insulation wanted to share some tips to prevent them from taking over your home!

5 Tips for Preventing & Controlling a Swarm Infestation

1. Seal cracks around windows, door frames, and utility pipes with silicone caulk to close up entry points. Special attention should be paid to areas of the home that get the most sun, as ladybugs and Asian Lady beetles are attracted to the warmth.

2. Trimming shrubbery and branches away from a home's exterior can also help to prevent Asian Lady beetles from gaining access.

3. If you don’t want Asian Lady beetles anywhere near your home or garden, or you don’t want to go through the effort of planting an entire garden, try planting or potting some mums. Asian Lady beetles do not like mums and will avoid them.

4. Cloves or bay leaves are two spices that Asian Lady beetles can’t stand. Place these spices near windows and other infested areas to shoo away your beetle infestation.

5. If these pesky beetles have already entered a home, homeowners can use a vacuum to remove them, but it is important to dispose of the bag outdoors to prevent the insects from crawling out. Do not squish them, as they will secrete an odor that could attract more!
