The Lake of the Ozarks Shootout Hall of Fame Dinner is a special time to honor those who have shaped the Shootout. The dinner is being held on August 25, 2020 at the Stables at Cannon Smoked Saloon in Sunrise Beach. A social hour will get the event started at 6 p.m., with dinner served at 7 p.m. and new inductees honored at 8:30 p.m. Shootout Top Guns and past dignitaries will honor and welcome the new inductees into the Shootout Hall of Fame. Tickets for the dinner are $35 each or $350 for a table, which includes a commemorative bottle of the official Shootout Whiskey. Everyone is welcome to come celebrate 32 years of Shootout and to honor the inductees.

5 Fun Facts about Cicadas

It's that time of year again, when we walk outside and hear that distinct buzzing noise that seems to drone on nonstop and seems to just keep getting louder as the days pass. This is the sound of the Cicada song. In this week's blog, we're giving a wealth of knowledge on these intriguing creatures and sharing 5 interesting facts about Cicadas!

What is a Cicada?
First of all, you've probably heard the calling of these little critters, but may not have ever actually seen where all the noise is coming from. Cicadas are oval-shaped, winged insects that provide a buzzing and clicking song heard in nature throughout the summer. There are more than 3,000 species of cicadas, but only about 190 species are common in the United States.

1. Cicadas are Herbivores.
This means they eat vegetation. Young cicadas eat liquid from plant roots, while molting cicadas eat twigs. Adult cicadas do not feed, according to U.S. Department of Agriculture.

2. They have Unique Mating Calls.
The buzzing sound they make is a mating call. Male cicadas vibrate a white, drumlike membrane on their abdomens called a tymbal. A group of singing cicadas is called a chorus. The singing attracts both males and females to a certain area. The males join in on the singing and the females mate with the males.

3. Female Cicadas Lay from 200 to 600 Eggs.
After mating, the female cuts slits into the bark of a twig and deposits her eggs there. She may do so repeatedly, until she has laid several hundred eggs. When the eggs hatch, the newborn nymphs drop to the ground, where they burrow and start another cycle.

4. Cicadas are the Elders of the Insect World.
Cicadas can live a relatively long time: 4 to 17 years, depending on whether they are annual or periodical cicadas. The periodical cicadas live the longest. They spend most of their lives underground as larvae, followed by a short adulthood — from two to six weeks — above ground, according to the University of Michigan's Museum of Zoology.

5. There are Two Types of Cicadas.
Annual cicadas emerge every year in late June or August, while periodical cicadas emerge in cycles of 13 or 17 years, depending on the species. When periodical cicadas emerge, all the adults in a given location emerge at the same. Tens of thousands to over a million insects can reside in a relatively small area of land. A group of periodicals that emerge at the same time is called a brood.

Cicadas Are Amazing Critters!
As with any kind of insect you may see around your home, especially any unfamiliar ones, seeing a cicada might cause a bit of panic at first sight. However, we feel its important to share that cicadas are mostly beneficial. They prune mature trees, aerate the soil, and once they die, their bodies serve as an important source of nitrogen for growing trees. If you notice a buzzing song around your home and see these intriguing insects around, just let them be. They'll soon be finishing out their life cycle and are not harmful to you or your lawn.

Missouri’s Elusive Critters: Scorpions

Scorpions in Missouri? Yes! As shocking as that may be to some, we do have scorpions! While scorpions generally prefer rocky places where they can hide in the dark, there have been many cases of these sneaky creatures showing up in homes around the Lake of the Ozarks. A B Pest Control & Insulation has the dirt on scorpions—read on to find out more about them.

Striped Bark Scorpions

In Missouri, we have one species called the striped bark scorpion. This species is distinguished, among other things, by a dark triangle is on top of the head. Young striped bark scorpions are pale yellowish brown, usually with two broad lengthwise dark stripes on the abdomen (the back); older scorpions are uniform dark brown with the stripes faint or lacking.

Where Can They Be Found?
Scorpions prefer glades with lots of loose rock (such as limestone or dolomite glades) so that they can hide from the sun during the day. Scorpions seek out these places, especially if there are few humans around, because here they find ideal shelter and plentiful food. Scorpions are sometimes found in buildings and shelters, as well as under piles of wood, brush, or garbage.

Facts About Scorpions
Scorpions have scary amazing survival abilities. When scorpions are in the wild, they regularly live from two to ten years, but they can live up to 25 years in captivity. They can go a year without eating and can survive 48 hours underwater due to their “book lungs.” Scorpions birth their young instead of laying eggs and they can be seen carrying their babies around on their back until they are old enough to take care of themselves. Scorpions have very low metabolic rates, allowing them to be able to survive on little food. These creatures will go to desperate measures when they do need food, and have even been known to eat their young.

Are They Dangerous?
While all species of scorpions do sting, only 25 of the 2,000 species in the world are venomous enough to be dangerous to adults. Although the sting of this species is quite painful, it is almost never life-threatening. However, just as with bee and wasp stings, some people can respond with an allergic reaction that requires medical attention. If you are in an area with likely habitat for scorpions or other venomous creatures, use caution when turning over rocks, and don't step or put your hand where you cannot see.

How Are Brown Recluses and People Alike?

Temperatures around Missouri are reaching the 90s! Many people are staying indoors with the nice AC to stay cool. However, you may not be the only thing taking refuge inside your home. Many insects and other critters have the same survival instincts as humans do. If they get to hot or cold, they try to find a more comfortable environment. So, how are brown recluse spiders and people alike? Due to the extreme temperatures we experience this time of year, brown recluse spiders are more noticeable because they're one of those critters, alongside humans, seeking comfort from the sweltering temps.

Brown Recluses Are Out & About
Brown recluses are not very big spiders, as they are about the size of a quarter. They're tan in color and have a dark spot in the shape of a violin on its body. Brown recluses act just like their name suggest - reclusive, so don't expect to see them roaming around during the day. They typically hide in dark corners of the home or in stored items like boxes and closets. Because these spiders like cool dark spaces, you may see them searching for new places to hide during the heat wave.

Be Aware Of Brown Recluses
Brown recluses are not likely to go out of their way to bite people. They will only bite people when they feel threatened. With this extreme heat, it's best to take precaution to avoid these creepy crawlers.

• Shake out clothing and shoes before dressing.
• Don't garden or handle firewood without gloves.
• Keep doors and windows shut.
• Minimize outdoor lights. Lights attract insects, which could attract spiders.
• Don't go out barefoot.
• Shake out bedding before going to bed.
• Eliminate as much clutter as possible in storage areas.
• Frequently dust and vacuum around windows, corners of rooms and under furniture.

Spider Bites
As previously stated, brown recluses are not likely to bite unless they feel threatened. People commonly get brown recluse bites in areas that the spiders have been hiding. It's common to get a brown recluse bite when changing clothes, putting your hands into a pocket or putting on shoes.

Although a bite from a brown recluse is painless at first, within a few hours the bite site will become swollen, red and tender to the touch. In most cases, the irritation ends there and the bite will heal on its own. However, in some cases, the venom begins to break down the cells in the skin and progress into a necrotic lesion that will need immediate medical attention. It's best to get medical attention right away after being bitten to ensure you're aren't allergic.

4 Signs of a Poorly Insulated Home

In the hot summer months, we expect our homes to provide comfort from the heat of the outdoors. And in the winter, we expect our homes to protect us from the cold. However, if you have old insulation or not enough insulation throughout your home, there’s a good chance that you're struggling with maintaining a consistent temperature for your family's comfort. But how can you tell if your home is poorly insulated? There are a few red flags that you can look for to determine whether or not you need to call on the experts at A B Pest Control & Insulation for your home insulation needs. Take a look.

1. Fluctuating Room Temperatures
As you walk from room to room throughout your home, the temperature should remain the same throughout each room. If different rooms have starkly different temperatures, that’s a pretty good indication that your home is poorly insulated. While your HVAC system with its return vents and ducts can play a big part in contributing to an even and comfortable environment, insulation is also important factor because without it, there's nothing to help prevent that cool air or heat from leaking out of your home through your walls.

If you cannot see any of the floor joist because the insulation is well above them, you probably have enough insulation. It is also important that the insulation is evenly distributed. Sometimes there is enough insulation in the middle, but the edges have very little.
