5 Critters We See At The Lake In The Autumn

The autumn season doesn't just bring in the insects, it also brings in unwanted critters that are seeking shelter from the cold weather. Luckily, a professional animal trapper at the Lake of the Ozarks can protect your home from these unwanted pests. From raccoons to rodents, the Lake area is home to many different creatures that could potentially damage your home if they come inside. A B Pest Control & Insulation lists five critters we see often at the Lake of the Ozarks.

1. Raccoons

Raccoons, like rodents, can cause a lot of damage to homes while they seek shelter for the winter months. They are known for chewing up electrical wires and can chew through home insulation. However, they can also damage air ducts, cooling systems, vents, fans and wood beams. Raccoons are large animals and in some cases have fallen through the ceilings of some homes. If they stay in your home a long time, they can also flatten the insulation in your home, lowering the R-value. In addition, when raccoons decide to make themselves at home in your attic, they will urinate and defecate, which is not only unsanitary and smells bad, but also contain numerous diseases.

2. Rodents

Mice and rats like to seek shelter during the cool season. However, it is important to evict them early, as a couple mice can become a dozen in a short amount of time. Rodents can cause a lot of damage to your home as well. They can chew through insulation, electrical wire and wood structures. Mice can fit into a hole the size of a dime, while rats can fit into crevasses the size of a quarter. Rodents are filthy creatures and can leave feces all throughout your home, which is filled with disease.

3. Snakes

Although snakes do not do any physical damage to our homes, it is certainly unsettling seeing them on the wrong side of the door. Snakes enter homes through open doors and windows, as well as through holes and crevasses. Snakes that come inside are usually small, so it doesn't take a big opening for them to make their way into your home. As the days get colder, snakes will seek warmth to hibernate during the winter months.

4. Squirrels

Attics are the perfect place for squirrels to nest and have babies. When squirrels nest in attics, they can cause damage to insulation, electrical wires and wood structures. In addition, as squirrels have babies, they will create more and more entry points. This means that they will cause extensive damage to the outside of your home. They will chew through the structure to make an easy access in and out of your home.

5. Opossums

Because opossums greatest challenge during the winter months is to survive, they will try to seek out warm places that have food. Unfortunately, that place just might be your home. It is sometimes hard to tell when an opossum has taken residence in your home, as they are nocturnal, so it is important to know the signs of their activity. Barking dogs, missing food and a strong odor are just some of the clues that indicate you may have an opossum in your home.

Get To Know A B Pest Control & Insulation

Having a trusted pest control company at the Lake of the Ozarks service your home can protect it from pests like spiders and rodents. At A B Pest Control & Insulation, we pride ourselves on exemplary services because we stand behind our work. In this week's blog, we get to know a little bit more about A B Pest Control & Insulation's owners Bert and Lisa:

Getting To Know A B Pest Control & Insulation

Question: What does “A B” stand for?

Answer: Believe it or not the "B" in A B does not stand for Bert. We couldn't come up with a name and wanted something family oriented, so we used A for our daughter Amanda and B for our son Brandon.

Question: Can you tell us a little bit more about your family?

Answer: My wife Lisa and I have the two kids as mentioned above.  Bert and Lisa are both from St. Louis and moved to the Lake of the Ozarks around the same time in their lives.

Question: How did you get into pest control?

Answer: Bert - I was offered a job at a local pest control company and wanted to change what I was doing for a living, I had worked in restaurants and garages my whole life and thought it would be a good change.

Lisa - I came on immediately as we opened our own business.

Question: What is your favorite thing about your job?

Answer: Finding ways to make people happy and be able to take care of problems.  New challenges present themselves all the time with chemical changes, new pests, or some problem that no one else wants to deal with.

Question: Have you always wanted to be in pest control?

Answer: Not exactly, I was offered a job with a local pest control company and we felt it was a chance to better our family.  When that company sold, I tried to stay on at the new company, but the customer service with the new company was suffering, we were asked to do it ourselves.  We decided to see if we could give the customers the service they were missing.  In reflection, we had no idea how big this could get.

Question: What do you like to do on your free time?

Answer: Bert - I like to ride dirt bikes in the woods.
Lisa - I like to read.

Question: What is the most common bug you treat at the Lake of the Ozarks?

Answer: Spiders are probably the most common bug at the lake, this is in part that the lake is a perfect breeding ground for them.

Question: What’s on your bucket list?

Answer: It will sound cliche but, both of us feel blessed with what we've been given in life and if this is the best it gets then we couldn't be happier.  We value family time as we know tomorrow is never promised.

Question: How was insulation added to your business?

Answer: It started as an innocent process.  We wanted to offer the insulation with pest control cellulose to our customers to see if it would help with spiders, etc.  We purchased a small machine to blow additional insulation in attics, etc.  In the state of Missouri, you are required to have a pesticide license to install the pest control cellulose.  About a year later we were approached by an individual that had a vast amount of experience in the insulation industry and as they say, the rest is history.

Webworms Taking Over The Lake of the Ozarks

While exploring the Lake of the Ozarks, you may have noticed webs in some of the trees. However, these webs are not created by spiders; they are created by an insect call webworms. Your Lake of the Ozarks pest control company has all the information you need on these pests and what you can do to get rid of them.

What Are Webworms?

Although they are called webworms, they are not worms, in fact, they are a type of moth. They feed on almost all tree leaves including walnut, hickory, elm, mulberry and willow, just to name a few. In the late spring or early summer, adults emerge and lay their eggs on the underside of leaves. They are hair-covered masses of several hundred eggs. The larvae will gather and produce a silky web that will surround the colony. They will feed inside the web and make it bigger as they grow. After feeding, they will find a protected place to spin their cocoon and pupate. After they exit their cocoon, adults will be either all white or white with black spots. Webworms will have two generations a year.

Are They Harmful To Trees?

Webworms are known for their distinctive webs that they create on the end of tree branches. Each nest could contain hundreds of caterpillars that feed together. By late summer or early fall, the nests may measure three feet across. In addition to the caterpillars, the nest contains excrement, dried leaves and cast skins. Although these nests contain hundreds of feeding caterpillars, they are only harmful to the aesthetics of the tree. Webworms are more of a nuisance than a threat to a healthy tree. Because trees are about to drop their leaves, a large feeding will not hurt a healthy tree. However, small trees that completely lose their leaves, may be weakened.

How To Get Rid Of Webworms

Although webworms aren't likely to hurt your tree, they can be a nuisance. If their web is small and easy to reach, you can take the web out by hand or with a rake. However, if the web is large and hard to reach, it is better to call a professional pest control company at the Lake of the Ozarks. It is best to take care of these webworms early, so they do not create big webs on the trees. In addition, if fewer adults form, there will be fewer eggs laid the following year.
