Valentine's Day Fun Facts

Get ready for the sweetest day of the year! Valentine's Day is full of love and chocolate. - According to Roman legend, Valentine's Day originated because Emperor Claudius II didn't want Roman men to marry during wartime. Bishop Valentine performed secret weddings, however, he was caught and was jailed and executed. While in jail, he wrote a note to the jailor's daughter and signed it "from your Valentine." He was executed the next day on February 14. 

- According to Hallmark, 114 million Valentine's Day cards are exchanged (not including the packaged kid's cards for classrooms), which makes it the second-largest holiday for giving greeting cards behind Mother's Day. 

- In 2016, the average American celebrating Valentine's Day spent nearly $147 according to the National Retail Federation. 

- The origin of the saying "wear your heart on your sleeve" came from the Middle Ages. Young men and drew names from a bowl to see who would be their Valentine. They would wear this name pinned onto their sleeves for one week for everyone to see.

- John Cadbury opened a tea and coffee shop in Birmingham, England in 1822, and soon expanded into chocolate manufacturing. In 1861, his son Richard greatly increased sales by packaging Cadbury chocolates in the world's first heart-shaped candy box for Valentine's Day. 

- 36 million boxes of chocolate are sold every year for Valentine's Day and 224 million roses are grown for Valentine's Day. 

- $1.6 million are spent on candy, $1.9 million are spent on roses and $4.4 million are spent on diamonds, gold and silver for Valentine's Day. In addition, each pet owner will spend nearly $5 on Valentine's Day gifts for their furry friends. 

- Men typically spend more money on Valentine's Day than women. In addition, 73 percent of rose sales for Valentine's Day are made by men. However, 15 percent of women will send flowers to themselves on Valentine's Day. 

- Teachers receive the most amount of Valentine's Day cards, followed by children, mothers, wives, girlfriends and pets. 

- Approximately six million people will get engaged and 2.6 million people get married on Valentine's Day.
