Keep Your Home Comfortable with Proper Insulation

As we get further into the fall season, the days are definitely getting cooler. While you're likely enjoying the savings you're probably experiencing by not having to run the A/C all day long, you're probably starting to wonder just how well insulated your home is as you wake to those cooler crisper temps. Soon enough, winter will be on its way, which typically means those higher energy bills will make their way back to your mailbox.

Fortunately, there's something you can do help help lessen the ache your wallet will feel when you kick on the furnace. A B Pest Control & Insulation knows that ensuring that your home is properly insulated can help save you money on heating and cooling costs. We can also keep your home comfortable with the proper insulation.

Lower Energy Costs
One of the most important reasons you should make sure that your home is properly insulated is so you don’t waste energy. Improperly insulated homes can waste both heating and cooling energy in your home by allowing heat transfer. Not only does it cost you more money, but it could also put a bigger strain on your system. There are many different types of insulation and A B Pest Control & Insulation can help you decide what types is best for your home or business.

Reduce Noise Pollution
Insulation has sound absorption qualities, so it can reduce unwanted noises that are created by appliances, electronic equipment, or even conversations. It can prevent sounds from being transmitted through the walls and even the floors of your home. Not only does the proper insulation keep unwanted noise at bay, but it also makes it easier for your furnace or air condition to keep the temperature constant without putting a strain on the system.

How Insulation Works
For the most part, most common insulation materials work by slowing conductive heat flow and convective heat flow. Regardless of the mechanism, heat flows from warmer to cooler until there is no longer a temperature difference. In order to maintain comfort, heat that is lost in the winter must be replaced by your heating system and the heat in the summer must be removed by your cooling system. By properly insulating your home, this heat flow will decrease by providing an effective resistance to the flow of heat.

Ensure Your Home Is Properly Insulated with A B Pest Control and Insulation!
The easiest and most efficient way to ensure that your home has the proper insulation levels is to call a professional. A B Pest Control and Insulation can evaluate your home and make the proper recommendations for the best insulation to meet your needs. With proper insulation, your home can easily stay cool when it’s hot outside and warm when it’s cold out. Your Lake of the Ozarks insulation company has team members with many years of experience in the insulation business so you can trust that we will get the job done right at a fair price. How Much Do You Know About Bats?

While some people may find bats to be creepy and disgusting, they're actually quite interesting and beneficial creatures! Now, we realize that not everyone will agree with our sentiments, but bats actually play a crucial role in the environment. They’re an important species that impact our daily lives in ways we might not even realize. From pollinating our favorite fruits to eating pesky insects to inspiring medical marvels, bats are heroes of the night. So, this week, we at A B Pest Control & Insulation wanted to share some facts about bats that you might not have known before now! Check it out:

1. There are over 1,400 species of bats worldwide.
Bats can be found on nearly every part of the planet except in extreme deserts and polar regions. The U.S. and Canada are home to about 45 species of bats and additional species are found in the U.S. territories in the Pacific and Caribbean. While Missouri has seen about 9 common species of bats within its state lines, only one family of bats predominates in Missouri: the evening bats. More than this have been spotted, but are not commonly seen in Missouri.

2. Not all bats hibernate.
Even though bears and bats are the two most well-known hibernators, not all bats spend their winter in caves. Some bat species like the spotted bat survive by migrating in search of food to warmer areas when it gets chilly.

3. Bats help pollinate fruit.
Over 300 species of fruit depend on bats for pollination. Bats help spread seeds for nuts, figs and cacao -- the main ingredient in chocolate. Without bats, we also wouldn’t have plants like agave or the iconic saguaro cactus.

4. Bats help keep the bug population in check.
Bats can eat their body weight or more in insects, numbering in the thousands! This insect-heavy diet helps foresters and farmers protect their crops from pests.

5. Bats can find their food in total darkness.
Not all bats are nocturnal. But those that are can locate insects to eat by emitting inaudible high-pitched sounds, 10-20 beeps per second and listening to echoes. This is called echolocation.

6. Bats are the only flying mammal.
While the flying squirrel can only glide for short distances, bats are true fliers. A bat’s wing resembles a modified human hand -- imagine the skin between your fingers larger, thinner and stretched. This flexible skin membrane that extends between each long finger bone and many movable joints make bats agile fliers.

7. Bats are fast little creatures.
Recent studies have showing that bats can fly at speeds of 60 mph or more. How fast a bat flies depends on the species, but researcher recently discovered that the Mexican free-tailed bat could reach speeds up to 100 mph, making it by far the fastest mammal on Earth.

Now that you know a little more about these wondrous creatures, we hope that you'll find the beauty and value of them as we do! Rarely are bats a nuisance, and can often be more of a benefit to have around than a pest. If you do happen to come across bats in your attic or outdoor building, contact A B Pest Control & Insulation. We'll come out and safely remove these harmless creatures and relocate them where they can thrive and continue to benefit our ecosystem!

5 Fall Pests to Look Out For

Fall at the Lake of the Ozarks is finally here and slowly making its debut and we couldn’t be more excited for cooler weather and beautiful fall foliage. However, many people often have the misconception that with cooler weather comes less pests and a declining need for pest control services. That actually couldn't be further from the truth. Pest control is just as important in the fall as it is any other time of the year. Check out 5 pests you might find scurrying around your home this fall.

1. Mice
Mice and other rodents may try to begin entering your home looking for a warm shelter with food and water through any small crack or hole. Access points can be anything from a pipe or vent to a broken seal around a window or door. They can chew through insulation and other easy access points. Inspect your home for any place you think a mouse could get through. Ensure all window and door frames, as well as utility pipes that lead to the outside, are sealed tightly. If you have screens on your windows or doors, make sure they're in tact and repair them if necessary.

2. Termites
Termites are another common pest we see making their way into homes in the fall months. While they primarily forage underground for cellulose, they can find their way into wood cords in an attempt to feed so they can return it to the colony to feed others. It's during these excursions that termites can unknowingly enter your home, possibly leaving a trail of pheromones for the colony to follow. And since many homes are insulated with cellulose (their primary source of nutrients), your home just became a welcoming humble abode for the colony!

3. Snakes
If you have birds in your yard or rodents in your house, you may be attracting snakes onto your property. Although you may not control the birds, you can control the rodent problem. Calling a professional pest control company at the Lake of the Ozarks can help you get rid of the rodents hiding in your walls. Unfortunately, snakes like similar conditions as human. During the summer, they like cool places and during the winter, they like warmer places to hibernate, which is why they may seek your home for shelter. During the fall, you may see more snakes than usual, as they are more active due to the nice weather and they are preparing for hibernation.

4. Bed Bugs
With school back in session and people traveling for the upcoming holidays, it's prime time for bed bugs to migrate. Since they are so resilient and can dwell almost anywhere without a host for so long, they'll find refuge in carpeting, behind light switch and plugin coverings, and floor boards. For bed bugs you'll need to strip off bedding from mattresses as these may contain bugs. Your clothes may possibly be infested with bugs, so you also need to wash these with water at a very high temperature and let them dry in high heat. A professional pest control company at the Lake of the Ozarks should be contacted to treat for bed bugs as they are extremely difficult pests to get rid of and can survive for up to a year without feeding. These pests require chemical treatment as well as high heat treatment, and may require multiple treatments to eradicate the infestation.

5. Cockroaches
While some pests and rodents migrate to warmer climates for the winter months, others may seek places to hide out from the cold or hibernate. Cockroaches are one of those iffy pests that can go either way. The winter months do pose a risk to cockroaches, which will often die when exposed to temperatures less than 15 degrees Fahrenheit. However, cockroaches can find plenty of ways to avoid that exposure and survive the cold months. Because of their unrelenting ability to survive even the harshest conditions, regular pest control treatments during the colder months are essential for controlling cockroaches.

Get Rid of Fall Pests with A B Pest Control & Insulation!
There are many pests that will go into hibernation within the next few weeks, but several will simply try to seek shelter in the warmth of your home.
